Women’s Lacrosse Wins Season Opener 9-7 at Alfred State

Alfred, NY – The SUNY Canton women's lacrosse team outscored host Alfred State 6-1 in the second and third quarters to earn a 9-7 road win in their season opener on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The host Pioneers rattled off the first three goals of the game scoring all three in just a 46 second span.
  • Canton was quick to respond less than a minute later as Hailey LaShomb scored the Roos first goal of the season off a feed from Caroline Nappi. Just over a minute later Sienna Hillicke found Ava Bodnar for her first collegiate goal, this one coming with a player advantage.
  • Bodnar assisted a Sydney Dunn goal with 4:39 left in the opening quarter to knot things at three apiece.  
  • Shots on goal were even at five apiece as the teams were all square at 3-3 after 15 minutes of action.
  • The visitors took their first lead of the game less than a minute into the second stanza when Kate Whitley registered her first career goal. A couple minutes later the Pioneers tied it once again off a free-position goal.
  • The Roos netted the final three goals of the quarter including two in the final 1:42 as Dunn, Nappi and Kenadie Garrow all scored.
  • The Roos won four of six draw controls in the second stanza taking a 7-4 lead into intermission. Dunn led Canton with two first-half goals, while Whitley and Nappi had a goal and assist each.
  • Canton carried their domination in the second quarter over to the third outscoring the Pioneers 2-0 behind goals from Bodnar and Hillicke to build the Roo lead to five heading to the fourth.
  • Alfred State got three back in the fourth quarter including one in the final minute but Canton earned the victory 9-7.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Bodnar led the offense with a team-high five points on two goals and tied a game-high with three assists. Dunn scored twice, while Hillicke, Nappi and Whitley added a goal and assist each.
  • Karlie Craft picked up a team-high five draw controls while adding three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kenadie Garrow registered a team-high five ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers.
  • Karlee Hargather led the Pioneers with three goals, three assists and five draw controls, while Katerina Strong scored twice.
  • Laura Falandys was credited with four saves in the win, while Maeve Runyon turned aside 10 shots in defeat.
  • Canton had the upper hand in shots on goal (19-11) and draw controls (10-8). The Roos went 18-for-23 on clears, while the Pioneers were 21-for-28.
