Utica, NY – Evan Pringle scored his fifth goal of the season and
Logan Kelly extended his point streak to five games, but the SUNY Canton men's hockey team dropped a road contest to the 14
th-ranked Utica Pioneers 5-1 Sunday night.
THE BASICS
- Result: Utica 5, SUNY Canton 1
- Location: Adirondack Bank Center – Utica, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (5-7) | Utica (8-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Roos established a lead early in this one as Pringle skated with it in the zone along the side boards. He nearly took it behind the goal line but instead took a sharp angled shot that went over the right shoulder of Frank Murphy for the excellently placed goal just 68 seconds into the game. Logan Kelly checked the assist on the play.
- With around 17 minutes left in the first half, SUNY Canton was called for a penalty. The Roos penalty kill, which came in as the 6th-best in the nation at almost 92%, looked strong early with the Pioneers struggling to get clean entries and no shots off.
- However, at the tail end of the 5v4, Utica's Nick Ahern took a shot from the blue line and it was beautifully redirected by John Gutt for the game-tying goal with 15:09 left to play and with five seconds left on the man-advantage.
- With 7:30 remaining in the first period, the Pioneers took the lead with Preston Brighton scoring on the wrap-around off a rebound and Utica went out ahead 2-1 on their home ice.
- The three-goal first period concluded with the Pioneers out in front by one and holding a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal.
- While the first ten minutes of the second period were fairly even, the final ten minutes were quite forgettable for the Roos as Utica tacked on three more goals to get their total up to five. Shots on goal in the period were 15-6 and the Pioneers were up four heading into the final 20.
- A few minutes into the third, Brayden Fryfogle intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and went the other way with it but could not get it past Murphy. With six minutes left, Samuel Moshurchak had a good look but missed high and then late in the game, new netminder Kelson Hooper made a nice save on a breakaway. Despite all this though, the Roos could not get any results on the scoreboard even with over half of their total shots on goal coming in the third period as they fell 5-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Pringle had the goal for his fifth of the season and 10th point, tying Kelly for the team-high in goals. Kelly earned his second assist of the season in the loss and Fryfogle led the Roos with three shots on net.
- Aiden Hughes and Nick Ahern both had three-point nights for Utica with Hughes grabbing one goal plus two assists while Ahern had a trio of helpers.
- The Pioneers doubled SUNY Canton on shots on goal 34-17 although the final period was an even 9-9. In a nearly penalty-free game, the Roos went 0-for-1 on the power play while Utica scored once on two cracks.
- All three goalies got some action for SUNY Canton, combining 29 saves on 34 shots. After giving up a goal on his first shot faced, Murphy sent aside the next 16 shots for a solid 16-for-17 night on the winning side.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will have nothing but SUNYAC teams the rest of the way, and will look to regroup with a home contest against winless Fredonia on January 9 at 7 p.m.
