Schoner Scores Twice as Roos Pull off Massive Upset at #4 Oswego

Oswego, NY – 18 times SUNY Canton and SUNY Oswego have played each other in hockey since 1967, no ties, no SUNY Canton wins, until now. Niko Schoner lit the lamp twice and the SUNY Canton men's hockey team stunned the 4th-ranked Oswego State Lakers with a 4-1 road win Saturday evening.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 4, Oswego 1
  • Location: Deborah F. Stanley Arena & Convocation Center – Oswego, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (8-10-1, 4-7-1 SUNYAC) | Oswego (14-3-2, 11-2-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos did a good job at preventing the Lakers from carrying the puck into the attacking zone which resulted in easy zone clears early on. However, puck possession was quite in favor of the Lakers through the first 10 minutes, although Trey Miller was not kept too busy as most of Oswego's shot attempts were wide of the net.
  • The Roos best chance of the period came after a puck was stolen away from behind the Oswego net with around five minutes left. Jackson Drysdale had a wide-open shot in the high slot, but it was blocked by Gavin McCarthy.
  • In an unusual end to a hockey period, a pane of glass in the Roos defensive zone broke after it was struck with a puck, and the teams headed into the dressing room with 45 seconds remaining on the first period timer. Shots on goal at this point were 8-5 in favor of the Lakers.
  • With 16:35 left on the second period, the Roos won a puck battle behind their own net, then Cory Liu sent it down ice to Niko Schoner. Schoner was harassed by a Lakers defender and was forced to attack McCarthy from an angle. McCarthy made a save on the shot attempt, but Schoner stuck with it and the loose puck in the crease ended up in the back of the Lakers net as Schoner scored off his own rebound for the 1-0 SUNY Canton lead.
  • With 4:37 left in the period, the Lakers scored off the stick of Drake Semrad who received a beautiful cross-ice pass which Miller stood no chance on saving.
  • The second period concluded in a 1-1 tie with Oswego leading shots on goal 22-14.
  • About a third of the way through the third period, in a little 4v4 action, the Roos came up out of their zone quickly and Colton Alexander got it in the offensive zone. Alexander fired a shot in the high slot and buried it blocker side past the Lakers netminder as the Roos went up 2-1. Schoner and Liu picked up helpers on the play.
  • Facing unrelenting pressure, the Roos were called for a late penalty with just under three minutes left. The Roos did a great job on the kill once again for the third time tonight as the Lakers struggled getting set up and getting any high-danger shots off.
  • Late in the power play, the Lakers pulled their goalie and after a zone clear, Schoner was all alone in the offensive zone for the easiest goal of his career and a 3-1 Roos advantage with 58 seconds remaining.
  • Evan Pringle scored again on an empty net with 13 seconds left, and the Roos earned a 4-1 win in a game for the ages.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Schoner scored twice for the Roos and had an assist as well as he posted a +3 on ice rating and three points. It was his highest point total of th season aside from tallying four points against Misercordia back in November. Alexander scored the game-winner early in the third, and Cory Liu had his first multi-assist game in almost a year with two apples.
  • Drake Semrad scored the only goal for the Lakers with Aidan Cooper and Brandon Cohen providing assists on the play.
  • SUNY Canton never got the chance on the power play in the matchup with the only Oswego penalty being an offsetting one. The Roos killed three penalties and only allowed one shot on goal throughout the six minutes of 5v4. Shots on goal finished 36-20 in favor of the home team.
  • Miller stopped 35 of 36 shots in his hard-earned victory for the Roos. McCarthy made 18 saves on 20 shots for the Lakers.
  • SUNY Canton was previously 0-18-0 against the Lakers dating back to 1967. The win was also the second-highest ranked win in school history, only behind beating No. 3 Adrian 6-4 over seven years ago (12/30/18).
