Lenihan Saves 24 Eclipsing 1,000 Career Save Mark, No. 15 Hamilton Blanks Roos

Clinton, NY – Molly Lenihan recorded 24 saves on 26 Hamilton shots, but the SUNY Canton women's hockey team dropped a 2-0 contest to the 15th-ranked Continentals on Saturday.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Hamilton 2, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location:  Russell Sage Rink – Clinton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (7-4-0) | Hamilton (5-3-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It did not take long for Hamilton to find the twine as a neutral zone turnover by Roos led to a 2v2 heading towards the Roos net. Grace Crowley flicked a backhand shot towards the goal and Bri Rockwood tipped it in for a beautiful opening goal.
  • The rest of the period was fairly clean with only a few shots on goal. SUNY Canton got on the power play with slightly less than two minutes left, but only a single shot from Riley Andzel came from it.
  • The Continentals carried their 1-0 lead into the second period, while also leading shots on target 8-5.
  • In the middle period, puck possession was dominated by Hamilton, but the Roos defense and goaltender Lenihan stood their ground to keep the Continentals from expanding their lead.
  • Hamilton finished the second frame with 25 shots in the 20 minutes, but only nine were on target. SUNY Canton had six shots on goal in the period.
  • Five minutes and change into the second period, the Continentals were able to get a good shot off from near the blue line. Lenihan could not hang on to the puck, and it was loose in the slot for a moment until Lilly Truchon picked up the loose change to find the back of the net for the Continentals second goal of the game.
  • The Roos battled, but a couple of penalties hindered SUNY Canton's ability to put some pressure on the hosts. Lenihan was pulled with 1:50 left, but only one shot by Kyra O'Keefe resulted from the brief 6v5 and Hamilton's tight defense earned them the 2-0 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Hamilton's two goal scorers were Rockwood and Truchon. Crowley, Cuora Sullivan, Lydia Bulluck, and Lila Snow all earned helpers on the day.
  • The Continentals won in shots on goal 26-19. Both teams were 0-for-2 on power play chances.
  • Lenihan saved 24 of 26 for SUNY Canton (.923 save percentage) and Evie Sheridan turned aside 19 in her shutout win. With Lenihan's 24 saves she eclipsed the 1,000 career save mark and now has 1,011 to her name over her three seasons at Canton.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will have exactly one week off heading to Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid on January 10 for a neutral site battle against the Utica Pioneers.
