Lake Placid, NY – Down two goals for most of regulation, the SUNY Canton women's hockey team lit the lamp twice in the final 10 minutes en route to a shootout win over the Utica Pioneers in a non-conference affair at Herb Brooks Arena Saturday night.
THE BASICS
- Result: SUNY Canton 2, Utica 2
- Location: Herb Brooks Arena – Lake Placid, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (7-4-1) | Utica (3-9-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams got an early chance on the power play, but neither squad could place the puck between the pipes. Utica got a second attempt on the power play 8:40 into the period and scored their first goal from it.
- The penalty kill started strong for SUNY Canton after a faceoff win and a zone clear, but the Pioneers got set right back up and a shot from the right faceoff dot was deflected in by Kelsey Elliot as Utica opened the scoring with 10:54 left in period number one.
- With just under three minutes into the first, the Pioneers scored again off a SUNY Canton neutral zone turnover and a beautiful backhand goal by Kaci Ryder as the Pioneers went out in front 2-0.
- The first period concluded with the same 2-0 score and Utica leading shots on goal 11-8.
- Very late into the second period, Asha Hanson had somewhat off a breakaway chance with nine seconds left, but a Pioneer defender hustled back and forced an awkward angled shot and Hanson could not stuff it home.
- The Roos held an edge of 8-5 in shots on goal in the second period with total shots reaching 16 on each side at this point.
- About halfway through the third period, the Roos got out ahead with Riley Andzel skating with it along the near side boards. The junior took an atypical, angled shot, but it squeaked through the wickets of Alex Venning's leg pads and slid into the back of the net as the Roos halved their deficit to 2-1.
- With five minutes left, Chamonix Jackson skated with it around the back of the Utica net and fired a backhander towards Venning. The Pioneers goaltender could not catch it cleanly, and the puck skipped right to Joey Schemenauer on the opposite side who put it into the wide-open net to tie the game 2-2.
- Neither team could add to their total after SUNY Canton's second goal, and regulation concluded with a 2-2 tie and the Roos holding a slight edge in shots on goal 26-23.
- Utica had one shot on net in the overtime period, and the Roos got an early look from Danika Lalonde and a later look by Isabella Paswaters, but Venning saved both and the game headed into a shootout.
- After four shootout rounds without a goal, Molly Lenihan made a save to begin the fifth round and then Danika Lalonde skated in with it from the right faceoff dot and sent a wrister past Venning for the shootout victory.
