Lenihan’s 39-Save Effort Not Quite Enough In One-Goal Loss at No. 13 Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – Molly Lenihan kept the Roos in the game with a monstrous performance in between the pipes on a 39-save afternoon, but a goal in the final five minutes sent the SUNY Canton women's hockey team to a tough 1-0 loss to the 13th-ranked Plattsburgh Cardinals on the road Friday night.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Plattsburgh 1, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena – Plattsburgh, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (9-6-1, 1-4-0 SUNYAC) | Plattsburgh (10-5-0, 5-0-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The puck spent a lot of time in the SUNY Canton end to begin with, and the Cardinals peppered Molly Lenihan with four shots on net in the first seven minutes.
  • The Roos got on the power play with around five minutes left in the first period but could not sustain significant zone time and never had a shot on goal. Right after this however, SUNY Canton had a takeaway which led to a wide-open look by Ashten Morris in the low slot, but Maddy Stetson made her presence felt around the net, and the Roos were kept off the scoreboard.
  • Lenihan made a big save with seven seconds to go, and the horn sounded with both sides still seeking their first goal, despite Plattsburgh leading shots on net 16-5.
  • The Roos were on much more even footing through the first 10 minutes with shots on goal for the period even.
  • SUNY Canton killed off a penalty in the second half of the period, then fended off about a 90-second stand in their zone. After a clear, the Roos had a couple nice looks on the other end by Danika Lalonde and Taylor Stoll but could not draw nylon.
  • At the conclusion of the period, shots on goal were still lopsided with the Cardinals holding a 31-11 advantage, but the score was still tied at nothing to nothing heading into the final 20 minutes of regulation.
  • The Cardinals got back into the power play late in the third period and things looked scary on a couple occasions, but the Roos killed it off.
  • With 4:29 remaining, the Cardinals controlled the puck in their defensive zone. Piper Smith was streaking towards the Plattsburgh o-zone and Kayson Ruegge found her unaccounted for, making a nice pass for a breakaway. Smith took advantage and broke the stalemate by beating Lenihan high blocker side for the 1-0 Plattsburgh lead.
  • The Roos pulled Lenihan with around one minute left, but the Cardinals were able to keep the puck out of their zone for the majority of the 6v5 segment, and the Roos took the 1-0 loss to the league-leading Cardinals.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The game's only goal was scored by Smith who now has a trio on the season. Ruegge's assist was her fifth of the season as well as her 11th point.
  • Final shots on goal totals were 40-17 in favor of the Cardinals. The Roos killed off three penalties, while being 0-for-1 on the man-advantage themselves.
  • Lenihan made 39 saves on 40 shots for a .975 save percentage. The match marked her season-high in saves and third highest of her career. Stetson saved 17 for the clean sheet.
