Fairport, NY – Molly Lenihan stopped 23 of 25 shots that were sent her way and the SUNY Canton women's hockey team had 42 shots on goal, but could not light the lamp in a 3-0 defeat at St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon.
THE BASICS
- Result: St John Fisher 3, SUNY Canton 0
- Location: Rochester Ice Center – Fairport, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (9-5-1) | St John Fisher (5-9-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- SUNY Canton's best look through the first 20 minutes came after the Roos won a puck battle near the point of their attacking zone, and Lilah Cudney led a 2v0 near the net but unfortunately, did not have a great scoring angle and Brynn Bacak was able to steer it aside.
- With just over four minutes left, the Cardinals got on the board after a shot from the point rebounded to Cameran Evans in the high slot who found the twine to commence the scoring.
- The Roos had several great looks in the second period, especially towards the end, but with only a couple minutes remaining, St. John Fisher got out on the break. A high-danger slot was saved by Lenihan, a wraparound missed, a shot in the slot was saved, but finally the rebound out near the left faceoff circle was slotted in for the goal and a 2-0 St. John Fisher advantage.
- Chamonix Jackson had a breakaway with 11 minutes left that Bacak made a save on, and after that, the Roos had the Cardinals on their heels with several shots in the next thirty seconds and about a minute of zone time but to no avail.
- St. John Fisher killed off a penalty late and still trailing 2-0, the Roos went goalie-less for final two minutes. Despite being down shorthanded 4v6, the Cardinals were able to score a short-hander with the Roos net empty to seal the deal 3-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Evans scored the first goal for St. John Fisher after tallying the lone Cardinals goal two days earlier in the contest at Canton. Sophie Grant had the next two.
- The Roos could not convert on any of their four attempts on the power play and surrendered a short-handed goal as well towards the end. The Roos did kill two penalties, however.
- Lenihan stopped 23 of 25 shots sent her way, while Bacak was a brick wall, with a perfect 42-for-42.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will begin a three-game road trip starting next weekend against the SUNYAC-leading Plattsburgh Cardinals on Friday, January 23 at 3 p.m.
