Pavlasova and Andzel Score, Roos Mount Comeback Win over Cardinals

Canton, NY – After giving up the game's first goal, Anna Pavlasova scored on the power play in the second period, and then Riley Andzel tallied a goal in the third as the SUNY Canton women's hockey team knocked off the St. John Fisher Cardinals 2-1 Thursday night.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 2, St John Fisher 1
  • Location: Terry Martin Ice Arena – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (9-4-1) | St John Fisher (4-9-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a very evenly matched first period, each team got one chance at the power play. In the SUNY Canton power play, the Roos had four shots, but all of them were blocked as the Cardinals did a good job protecting their goaltender, Brynn Bacak.
  • St John Fisher got on the power play with around six minutes left in the period and generated a couple of looks in the low slot, but Molly Lenihan steered a pair aside.
  • The period ended with the Roos holding a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal in the scoreless tie.
  • Just a couple minutes into the second period, the Cardinals got out on a 2v1 after a nice zone clear. Erin Landry fired a shot in the high slot, but it was Cameran Evans that put in the rebound for the game's opening goal.
  • Around 10 minutes into the second, the Roos were out in the power play and Andzel put a shot on net from the left faceoff dot. Bacak saved the puck, but it was loose in the crease until Anna Pavlasova cleaned it up for the goal that made it 1-1.
  • The Cardinals killed off a penalty midway through the third, but with 5:30 left to play, Andzel delivered. The Cardinals got a clear in their zone, but Andzel scooped it up. St. John Fisher went to change defense and Andzel took advantage, entering the zone opposite the Cardinals bench. St. John Fisher could not recover in time, and the junior out of West Seneca, NY was all alone and scored low blocker side for the eventual game winning goal.
  • The Cardinals could not do much in the third period, only registering three shots on goal. A penalty with 2:40 left to play hindered their comeback efforts even more, and despite an empty net in the final minute, the visitors failed to score as the Roos earned their ninth win of the season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Andzel led the Roos with two points off a goal plus a helper. The junior now has a three-game point streak and has eight points in the past six games. Palvasova scored a goal, and Danika Lalonde had an assist to put herself in sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC with 11 helpers on the season.
  • The Cardinals, who are in their inaugural season, got their tally from Cameran Evans which was assisted by Erin Lantry and Casey Turek.
  • Shots on goal were tight in the first and second period, but after the Roos outshot the Cardinals 14-3 in the third, total numbers turned out 34-22 in favor of SUNY Canton. St. John Fisher went 0-for-3 on the power play while the Roos converted once on four attempts.
  • Lenihan was 21-for-22 on saves in her fourth win this season. Bacak had a great night in the loss, stopping 32 on 34 Roos shots.
