Oswego, NY – Emerson Coulter once again led the Roos with 19 kills and 33 digs across two games on Saturday, September 20 as the SUNY Canton volleyball team split their two games losing to the Brockport Golden Eagles 3-1 but beating the Keuka Wolves 3-2 to round out the weekend.

The Roos defeated the Golden Eagles 25-19 in the first set, but dropped the next three 25-16, 25-8, and 25-14. In the Keuka game, SUNY Canton jumped ahead with a 2-0 lead after 25-13 and 25-19 victories but lost the next two 25-17 and 25-23 before taking the final set 17-15.

HOW IT HAPPENED

MATCH 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos looked strong early on in the first set as they were quickly doubling up Brockport 12-6.
  • The Golden Eagles had it going after this though, and eventually cut it down to a single point 16-15. However, the Roos then scored five straight points with a kill by Isabella Cruz and service ace from Abby Raven to push ahead 21-15.
  • SUNY Canton did not allow the Golden Eagles to get on a run the rest of the set and went on to win 25-19 off a kill from Coulter.
  • In the second set, Brockport had the early momentum and got themselves out ahead 11-6.
  • The Roos closed the gap down to 16-13 at one point, but immediately following this, the Golden Eagles scored five of the next six to make the game 21-14.
  • Despite a late kill by Cruz, the Brockport defense stymied the Roos and the Golden Eagles won 25-16 as the two teams split the first two sets.
  • The third set was all Brockport after they started the game only leading 9-6, but then scored eight straight points and 12 of the next 13 to blow the game open 21-7 and went on to win 25-8.
  • The beginning of the fourth set started with a 6-5 advantage for the Golden Eagles but then Brockport went on a 10-2 run to lead 16-7.
  • Only once more in the game did the Roos score consecutive points with kills by Brooke Hite and Madison Bigelow, and Brockport won the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.

MATCH 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The Roos began game two of the afternoon on a high note by taking an 8-2 lead through 10 points off an ace by Nadia Frigon.
  • SUNY Canton never looked back after this, leading 15-9 then going on an 8-0 run. During this spurt, Coulter had a kill, and Daycee Bane had a whopping four service aces.
  • The Roos went on to dominate the set and win by a score of 25-13.
  • The second set was a little more competitive early, but SUNY Canton still had an 11-9 lead which became a 17-9 lead with Bane serving who had two aces in the 6-0 run.
  • The Roos were in command the rest of the way and won 25-19 off a set-winning kill from Tionna Edghill.
  • The Wolves came ready to play in the third set earning themselves a 10-4 lead and later a 16-7 advantage.
  • A kill from Hite made the game 16-11, but Keuka was able to put some distance between themselves and the Roos after scoring five of the next six points.
  • The Wolves looked good the rest of the way and went on to take the third set 25-17.
  • In the early part of the fourth set, the Roos held onto a slim lead at 12-11, but then scored six of the next seven points behind aces by Raven and Coulter with Coulter grabbing a kill as well to put SUNY Canton up 18-12.
  • Right after this though, Keuka stormed back to 19-18 and then eventually took their first lead of the set at the last moments, going up 24-23.
  • The Roos called a timeout but could not gather themselves to win in the fourth set as a kill by the Wolves sent the match to set number 5.
  • SUNY Canton was trailing 5-3 in the fifth but then scored six straight with two kills by Edghill in this run.
  • Keuka recovered and in entertaining fashion, the two teams were within a point of each other until the game was tied 14-14.
  • The Wolves scored their 15th point immediately, but then a kill by Coulter followed by two attacking errors from Keuka gave the Roos a hard-earned victory in the final match of the Oswego Tournament.
