Roos Make Statement in First Set but Fall in Four to Saints

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton volleyball team made a big statement by taking the first set over crosstown St. Lawrence, but ultimately, the Saints earned a 3-1 victory Tuesday night in Burkman Gymnasium.

In a very tight first set, the Roos won 26-24 after scoring the final three points, battled hard but dropped the second and third sets 25-18, and 25-20 respectively, then lost the fourth and final set by a score of 25-14.

THE BASICS
  • Result: St. Lawrence 3, SUNY Canton 1
  • Location: Burkman Gymnasium – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (6-10) | St. Lawrence (9-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was all Roos to begin the game as they scored the first four points of the match with an ace by Isabella Cruz and a kill by Brooke Hite; however, the Saints got back into it and eventually lead 7-6.
  • The remainder of the set was about as entertaining as it can get, consisting of several ties and lead changes with neither team leading by more than two points.
  • The two teams eventually landed at 24-24 after a kill by Emerson Coulter. Coulter was not finished showing her prowess, smashing another kill to put the Roos ahead 25-24. Then, a St. Lawrence attack error ended the overtime match with SUNY Canton taking the first set.
  • The second set was much the same as the first to begin with, but things got a bit ugly for the Roos after the Saints scored seven straight points to pull ahead 15-9.
  • A little later, a kill by Abby Raven and an ace from Coulter helped SUNY Canton score three straight to make it 18-15, but the Saints went on another run to finish the game by scoring five of the final six points to prevail 25-18.
  • The third set started with a 5-0 St. Lawrence lead, then SUNY Canton went on a 6-1 run to make it 7-6 highlighted by a couple of aces by Bane, but the Saints scored seven straight to make it a 14-6 game.
  • The game was played evenly for a while, until with the Roos trailing 21-15, SUNY Canton rattled off five straight with kills by Cruz and Raven to get right back into it at 21-20.
  • Despite this though, the Roos ran out of gas and the Saints scored the last four points to win 25-20 and jump ahead 2-1 in the match.
  • The Roos were playing from behind early in the fourth set after they were doubled up 10-5 and later 18-9.
  • Back-to-back service aces from Raven were part of a late 3-0 SUNY Canton run, but other than that, not much went right for the Roos in the final set as they fell 25-14.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Coulter led the Roos with 12 kills while Cruz eight. Along with Cruz, Raven also had eight kills while hitting .235 on the night (8-4-17) and added a pair of service aces.
  • Defensively, Cruz logged 17 digs while Coulter and Norman had nine. Norman also topped the Roos with 16 assists and libero Daycee Bane had eight digs and two service aces.
