Bigelow & Pelech Lead Roos in Sweep over Bobcats

Canton, NY – Junior Madison Bigelow and sophomore McKenna Pelech combined for 17 kills as the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team earned the 3-0 sweep over visiting Paul Smith's on Tuesday evening.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Canton jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead capped by an ace from freshman Isabella Cruz.  A brief Bobcat run narrowed the score to 5-3 but the Roos scored 12 of the next 15 points to go ahead 17-6.  A kill by sophomore Emerson Coulter made it 21-12 in favor of the Roos and they were able to close out the set 25-13.
  • In the second set, it was Paul Smith's who took an early 8-5 lead.  The two teams traded points before the Roos ran off five straight points that included a kill by freshman Lauren Park to go up 13-10.  Canton rattled off nine of the next 12 points to lead 22-13.  The Bobcats rallied to close the gap to 24-19 but a kill by senior Kiley Zicari finished the set in favor of the Roos 25-19.
  • Both teams traded points in the final set before Canton took a 9-8 lead on a Nadia Frigon ace.  The Roos scored six of the next seven points including a kill by sophomore Kayann Gunn to go ahead 15-9.  Canton continued to extend the lead and closed out the set 25-17, to sweep the match 3-0.


 INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Bigelow led all players with nine kills on the evening, adding two aces.
  • Pelech added eight kills hitting .636 (8-1-11).
  • A balanced defense saw sophomore Makenna Cameron lead the way with four digs.  Four other Roos recorded three digs each.
  • Frigon and Lauren Norman recorded 15 assists each.


WHAT'S NEXT?

The Roos will head south to participate in the Oswego Tournament where they will play in four games over the weekend, starting with a two-match day on Friday, September 19 against Utica at 2 p.m. and Pitt Bradford at 8 p.m.
