Hayes Records Three Hits in Doubleheader at Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Ava Hayes went 3-for-5 on the day to lead the SUNY Canton softball team as they dropped a SUNYAC doubleheader at SUNY Potsdam on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Bears jumped out to a quick start scoring seven runs on three hits and an error in the first inning.
  • Potsdam added one run in the second and four runs each in the third and fourth innings.
  • The Roos got on the board in their final at-bats when Rylynn Martin-McIntyre reached on an error with two outs that scored Marissa Hawkins.
  • Bella Betancur, Hayes and Torie Moore had one hit each for the Roos in the opener.
  • Alexys Rosick paced Potsdam with four hits, three runs and three RBI, while Kaylee Dobransky, Lexie Cottrill and Kaylee LaForest recorded two hits each. Danielle Moscarello drove in three runs, while Cottrill, LaForest and Bennett tallied two RBI each.
  • Cottrill earned the complete game win allowing one unearned run with seven strikeouts in five innings.
  • Ace Rogers took the loss surrendering 13 earned runs with two strikeouts and five walks in four innings.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Canton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after their at-bats in the top of the first. Betancur led off with a single to right center and stole second. With one out she moved over to third on a Sarah Balcom fly ball to right field. Hayes singled through the right side to score Betancur and Shae Arsenault followed with a double down the left field line. Hayes then scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Bears responded with three unearned runs on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead after one.
  • Canton tied things up in the top of the second with another run. Martin-McIntyre drew a one out walk and moved to second on a sacrifice from Betancur. Martin-McIntyre then stole third and scored on a throwing error.
  • Potsdam took the lead for good with two runs on three hits and two more Canton errors in the bottom of the second.
  • The Bears added three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings for the 11-3 final in five innings.
  • Hayes led the Roos with two hits, one run and one RBI, while Betancur recorded a hit and a run and Arsenault finished with a double.
  • Cottrill and Kiara Lovejoy paced Potsdam with three hits each, while LaForest, Moscarello and Dobransky drove in two runs each.
  • Sam Horne picked up the win for the Bears allowing two earned runs with two strikeouts and three walks in five innings.
  • Rogers took the loss allowing four earned runs with a strikeout in 4.2 innings.

The Roos are scheduled for another SUNYAC doubleheader on Tuesday when they square off with Fredonia State at 1 p.m. at Onondaga Community College.
