Roos Storm Back to Tie Game, Fall Late at Oneonta as Scott Sets Single-Game Saves Record

Oneonta, NY – After trailing by eight goals early in the third quarter the Roos stormed back to tie the game at 13 in the fourth quarter before eventually falling 18-16 in SUNYAC action on Saturday at Oneonta. Senior Olivia Scott set a single-game program record stopping 23 shots in the narrow loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Dragons outscored Canton 5-2 in the first quarter with Maddy Caron and Caroline Nappi finding the back of the net.
  • Oneonta continued to control the game in the second quarter holding Canton to just one goal in the quarter from Lindsey Wunder. The hosts led 10-3 at intermission.
  • The Red Dragons scored the first goal of the third quarter before Canton rattled off six straight goals and scored 10 of the next 12 goals to tie things up at 13 apiece after Olivia McCormick's second straight goal with 10:15 remaining.
  • Oneonta regrouped caging the next three goals to take a 16-13 lead with 5:41 to play. McCormick got Canton back within two less than a minute later, but the Red Dragons scored twice to open an 18-14 lead with 3:35 to go.
  • Sydney Dunn and Caron scored back-to-back goals with Caron's coming with 45 seconds left but the hosts were able to hang on for the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Scott had at least five saves in each quarter on her way to setting the single-game saves record. Her 23 saves breaks the previous mark of 22 set by both Nicole Piskorowski (2/26/20 vs. Plattsburgh) and Holli-Jo Cota (4/3/12 vs. Morrisville). Scott's previous career-high was 18 stops against Hartwick (3/22/23). Scott also led Canton with six ground balls and two caused turnovers on Saturday.
  • Wunder paced the Roos with seven points on a goal and game-high six assists and added six draw controls. Caron finished with six points on five goals and an assist to go with eight draw controls. McCormick tallied four goals, while Nappi, Dunn and Ava Dupee recorded two each.
  • Lindsey Townes and Ellie Downey paced Oneonta with five goals each, while Angelina Weinert added three. Cassidy Moore picked up a game-best 16 draw controls, while McKenzie Busch registered a game-best seven ground balls.
  • Oneonta held the edge in shots on goal (41-27) and ground balls (29-21). Draw controls were even at 19 apiece. The Red Dragons were 14-for-15 on clears while Canton was 14-for-22. The Roos went 3-for-5 on free-position shots, while Oneonta was 5-for-14.

The Roos are back in SUNYAC action on Tuesday when they host Morrisville at 4 p.m.
