Canton Wins Thrilling Back-and-Forth Battle of Route 11 vs. Bears, Scott Stops Season-High 14 Shots

Potsdam, NY – In an exciting game showcasing momentum swings and lead changes, SUNY Canton pulled out a 10-7 come-from-behind victory in a cold blustery conference matchup over rival SUNY Potsdam. With 14 pivotal saves Potsdam native Olivia Scott backstopped the Roos to their first-ever SUNYAC victory.

After scoring the first three goals, SUNY Canton was able to withstand a six-goal flurry by Potsdam, as the hosts took a 6-3 lead into half. The Roos responded by outscoring the Bears 7-1 in the second half on their way to the victory, with Maddy Caron leading all scorers with five goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Canton opened the first quarter three minutes in with a goal from Olivia McCormick on the player advantage, assisted by Lindsey Wunder.
  • They would keep the pressure on the Bears, scoring again two minutes later as Caron scored her team leading 35th goal from the free position.
  • The Roos would score their third straight goal at 5:40 left in the first, as Morgan Montgomery got on the scoresheet, assisted by McCormick.
  • Momentum shifted back to Potsdam as they closed the quarter with three straight goals of their own, heading into the second frame deadlocked at three goals apiece.
  • Potsdam came out hot in the second, adding their fourth tally less than a minute in on the player advantage. The game settled down as both teams turned up the defensive pressure, with the Bears holding a 4-3 lead as the half wound down.
  • Potsdam scored two quick goals within a minute as they tallied at the 3:40 mark and again at 3:09 to make it a 6-3 game heading into half.
  • Looking to get back in the game out of the halftime break, Canton leaned on Scott, who made four saves to keep the Bears off the scoresheet.
  • The back-and-forth affair saw Caroline Nappi, Caron, and Ava Dupee score to bring the score back even at 6-6, with Dupee's tally coming with the extra attacker.
  • Caron scored with 45 seconds remaining in the third as the Roos took a 7-6 advantage into the fourth quarter. Wunder earned an assist on the play.
  • Canton picked up right where they left off in the fourth, outscoring the Bears 3-1 in the final quarter on their way to a 10-7 victory, with two more Caron goals and a second by McCormick.
  • Olivia Scott stood strong in net only allowing Potsdam one goal in the second half stopping eight of the nine shots she faced after intermission.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Caron continued her scoring ways, tallying five goals to reach 228 career scores and extending her program record and pacing the leagues leading scorers with her 39th of the year, while leading Canton with five draw controls. McCormick added two goals while Dupee, Montgomery, and Nappi all found the back of the net in the win. Aayliah White and Wunder picked up three and two draw controls, respectively.
  • The Bears were led by Tessa Pierce, Lindsey LaDue, and Jayla Thompson with two goals each.
  • Olivia Scott had an impressive afternoon with her 14 saves, registering a .667 save percentage and seven free-position saves in the win. She also picked up a game-high seven ground balls. Ali Servati recorded four ground balls to lead the Roos defense.
  • Kimora Swamp stopped nine Canton shots in the defeat.
  • The Bears narrowly edged the Roos in shots (31-30), shots on goal (21-19), and draw controls (11-10), while the teams were even at 24 ground balls each.
  • Both goaltenders stood tall on free-position shots, as Canton went 2-for-4 and Potsdam went 2-for-9.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in SUNYAC action on Saturday when they host Buffalo State at 12 p.m. The game will be the team's Faceoff Against Cancer contest.
