Houghton, NY – Bella Betancur,
Sarah Balcom and
Torie Moore combined for 11 hits on the day but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped a pair of games at Houghton University on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
- The Roos got on the board first in the first inning when Moore led off with an infield single and stole second. With two outs Balcom legged out another infield single and with some aggressive baserunning Moore scored from second.
- The Highlanders responded with three runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the first and added another run in the second.
- Canton got the bats going in the second when Jordyn Tarbox drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Moore. Betancur singled before a runner was gunned down on the base path. Maggi Yandoh drew a walk and Balcom singled home Betancur. Emily Hobart came up with a clutch two out double to left center to plate Yandoh and Balcom tying the game at 4-4.
- The Highlanders responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and added one run in the fourth before exploding for five runs in the fifth in the run-rule win.
- Balcom led the Roos going 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Moore was 2-for-2 with a run. Hobart and Betancur had one hit each with Hobart driving in two runs.
- Kareena Ulfig went 4-for-4 with two runs and three RBI for Houghton, while Olivia Carr was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Kelly Burnett also had two hits and drove in three runs.
- Ulfig picked up the win on the mound tossing a complete game giving up four runs with 11 strikeouts and three walks.
- Yandoh took the loss surrendering 12 runs with five walks and a strikeout in 4.1 innings.

GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
- The Roos got out to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap when Betancur scored Moore on an RBI single and Beteancur came around after a Balcom double to left field.
- Houghton got one back in the bottom of the inning before Yandoh scored Moore on an RBI ground out in the third.
- The Highlanders exploded for seven runs on three hits and three errors scoring five unearned runs in the third inning.
- Tarbox singled home Ava Hayes in the fourth inning before the hosts plated nine runs in the fourth inning leading to the 17-4 victory.
- Betancur and Moore paced the Roos with two hits each, while Betancur, Balcom, Tarbox and Yandoh drove in one run each.
- Ulfig, Carr and Danielle Nelson had two hits each with Nelson driving in five runs for Houghton.
- Rebecca Oates picked up the win giving up three earned runs with eight strikeouts and walk in five innings.
- Yandoh took the loss allowing 17 runs, only five of which were earned, with five walks and two strikeouts in four innings.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos doubleheaders next weekend against Cobleskill (3/28) and Delhi (3/29) have been canceled. The team is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday (4/2) when they visit Clarkson for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.Â
