Dunn & Caron Score Twice Each as Roos Open Season at Clarkson

Potsdam, NY – Sydney Dunn and Maddy Caron scored twice each and Lindsey Wunder added a team-high three points but a strong second half carried host Clarkson to a 16-6 win in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped out to an early lead just over six minutes in when the Canton captains hooked up as Wunder found Caron for her first goal of the season.
  • The Golden Knights caged back-to-back scores from Morgan Kenna and Sydney Nakas 40 seconds apart, but Dunn found the back of the net with 13 seconds left in the opening quarter as things were tied at 2-2 after 15 minutes.
  • The hosts scored the first four goals of the second stanza with two from Gabby Cranfield to open a 6-2 advantage. Caron netted her second of the game, with this one once again coming from Wunder, to get the Roos within 6-3 at intermission.
  • Shots on goal were 17-4 in favor of the Knights at the half, but Olivia Scott made 11 stops to keep Canton within three goals.
  • Clarkson scored the first three goals of the second half with Nakas netting two more before Wunder broke the run with her first goal of the season. The hosts scored four straight to open a convincing 13-4 advantage before Dunn added her second of the game. The Knights led 14-5 after three quarters.
  • Olivia McCormick added her first collegiate goal for Canton in the fourth quarter with the game ending with a 16-6 final score.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Wunder led the Roos with a goal and two assists to go with three draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Caron tallied two goals, a game-high eight draw controls and two ground balls. Dunn finished with a pair of goals and two caused turnovers, while Sienna Hillicke also forced a pair of turnovers.
  • Nakas paced Clarkson with four goals, three assists and four ground balls, while Cranfield tallied two goals three assists and Madelynn Barnum recorded a hat trick and seven draw controls.
  • Clarkson controlled shots (35-13), shots on goal (29-12), ground balls (23-9) and turned the ball over just 12 times compared to 24 for the Roos. Clarkson was 20-for-22 on clears, while Canton was 16-for-21.
  • Jennaca McGill made one save allowing three goals in the first half in the win for Clarkson, while Riley Donovan turned aside five shots surrendering three scores in the second half.
  • Scott made 13 saves in the loss for the Roos.
