Three SUNY Canton Winter Sports Teams Set for SUNYAC Playoff Appearances

Canton, NY – Three different SUNY Canton winter sports teams have qualified for their respective SUNYAC Tournaments as the women's basketball and men's and women's hockey teams have all earned playoff berths.

The SUNY Canton women's basketball team has earned the four seed and will host the five seed Plattsburgh State in a SUNYAC First Round game on Tuesday (2/25) at 7 p.m. in the Roos House. Tickets are free for all SUNYAC students with student ID, while tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 years old and younger. Tickets will only be sold in person (CASH ONLY) and ticket sales will begin at 6 p.m on Tuesday. For those who can't make the game in person there will be video and live stats available.
 
The SUNY Canton men's hockey team has earned the six seed and will visit the three seed Buffalo State in a SUNYAC First Round game on Wednesday (2/26) at 7 p.m. Tickets are free for SUNYAC students with student ID, while tickets for all others are $7. Tickets can be purchased online or in person at the venue. For those who can't make the game in person there will be video and live stats available.
 
The SUNY Canton women's hockey team has earned the four seed and will visit the one seed and No. 4/2 nationally-ranked Oswego State on Saturday at 3 p.m. Tickets are free for SUNYAC students with student ID, while tickets are $11 for adults and $8 for children 12 years and younger. They are available for sale both online and in person at the venue.
 

SUNYAC Tournament Previews
Women's Basketball
The Roos went 15-10 overall and 10-8 in SUNYAC games during the regular season to claim the four seed. Plattsburgh, the Roos first round opponent, finished the regular season 14-11 overall and 10-8 in league games. The teams split their regular season matchups with the Cardinals winning 72-64 on January 17th in Plattsburgh and the Roos earning a 58-46 victory in Canton on February 15th. The Roos won the tiebreaker earning the right to host due to splitting a pair of games against the three seed Oswego, while the Cardinals lost both their matchups to the Lakers.

Cortland captured the top seed after going 22-3 overall and 17-1 in league games beating the Roos by just two points in both team's regular season finale on Saturday. The winner of the Canton-Plattsburgh game will play the No. 1 seed Red Dragons on Friday (2/28) in Cortland in a SUNYAC semifinal game at 5:30 p.m. In the other first round game on Tuesday (2/25) the three seed Oswego State (16-9, 13-5 SUNYAC) hosts the six seed Oneonta (11-14, 8-10 SUNYAC).

The winner of that game will square off with the two seed New Paltz on Friday (2/28) at Cortland at 7:30 p.m. The winners of the two semifinals will meet for the SUNYAC championship on Saturday (3/1) at 4 p.m. The winner will earn the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
 
Men's Hockey
The Roos went 9-15-1 overall and 6-8-0 in SUNYAC games during the regular season to finish in a tie for fifth place in the standings with SUNY Potsdam (8-13-4, 6-7-1 SUNYAC). The Bears won the tiebreaker off their two conference head-to-head wins vs. Canton. The Roos are the six seed and will travel to three seed Buffalo State (15-10-0, 9-5-0 SUNYAC) for a SUNYAC First Round game on Wednesday (2/26) at 7 p.m. The teams split two regular season games with the Bengals defeating Canton 3-2 in OT on November 23rd in Canton. The Roos bounced back with a key 4-3 win in Buffalo on February 7th as part of a four point weekend.

Cortland captured the top seed after going 19-6 overall and 12-2-0 in league games. Oswego (14-8-3, 9-4-0 SUNYAC) earned the two seed and both the Red Dragons and Lakers will receive first round byes. In the other first round game the four seed Plattsburgh (14-10-1, 8-6-0 SUNYAC) will host the five seed Potsdam.
 
If the Roos are to beat the Bengals on Wednesday night they would travel to top seed Cortland for a semifinal matchup on Saturday (3/1) at 7 p.m., as the teams are reseeded after the first round in men's hockey. The SUNYAC championship game is scheduled for Saturday (3/8) at 7 p.m. at the highest remaining seed with the winner earning the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Women's  Hockey
The Roos went 8-15-2 overall and 6-11-1 in SUNYAC games during the regular season to finish in fourth place in the standings culminating their regular season with a crucial four point weekend at Morrisvlle edging out the Mustangs for the final playoff berth. Canton is the four seed and will travel to the top seed and No. 4/2 nationally-ranked Oswego on Saturday (3/1) for a SUNYAC semifinal matchup at 3 p.m. The teams met three times in the regular season with the Lakers winning 3-1 in Oswego on November 8th, while securing 5-0 and 2-1 victories in Canton on February 7th and 8th, respectively.

In the other semifinal matchup, the two seed and No. 10 nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State will host the three seed and No. 8 nationally-ranked Cortland on Saturday. The winners of the two semifinal matchups will square off for the SUNYAC championship on Saturday (3/8) at the highest remaining seed. The SUNYAC champion will earn the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
