Women’s Basketball Closes out Regular Season with SUNYAC Win vs. Fredonia

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's basketball team never trailed en route to a 65-53 SUNYAC win against visiting Fredonia in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday. The Roos have secured the three seed in the upcoming SUNYAC playoffs and will host six seed Oneonta on Tuesday, February 24. More information on the tournament will be available early next week.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos raced out to a 15-5 lead just over five minutes in following a Kate Grainger three-pointer. Canton led 15-12 after 10 minutes of action.
  • Once again, the hosts started the quarter on fire opening the second stanza on a 12-0 run to take a 27-12 lead after a Sierra Pabo fastbreak layup. Canton led 29-19 at intermission.
  • The Roos led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter after threes from Grainger and Grace Villnave. The hosts took a double-digit lead (48-36) to the fourth quarter.
  • The Canton lead expanded to 16 midway through the fourth frame and the Blue Devils were never able to trim the deficit to single digits in a 65-53 Roos win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Grainger was just one point shy of her season-high posting a game-high 19 points shooting 7-for-12 from the field and 4-for-7 on threes while adding six rebounds. Kat McRobbie-Taru tallied a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Pabo added 10 points and a career-best nine assists.
  • Payton Gilbert was the lone scorer in double figures for Fredonia with 11 points and nine boards, while Grace Alexander and Kailee Bladin scored eight each.
  • Canton held the upper hand in rebounds (50-45) and points in the paint (36-30), while Fredonia had a slim advantage in bench points (17-12) and second chance points (12-8).
 

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos have secured the three seed in the upcoming SUNYAC playoffs and will host the six seed Oneonta in a home game in Roos House on Tuesday, February 24. Game time and more information will be available early next week.
