Kelly Scores as Roos Face #14 Cortland

Canton Clinches SUNYAC Playoff Berth

Cortland, NY – Freshman Logan Kelly scored his third goal in two nights, but the SUNY Canton men's hockey team gave up two special team goals and dropped a tight 2-1 game against #14 SUNY Cortland on Saturday night. With other results around the league on Saturday evening the Roos have clinched at least the six seed in the upcoming SUNYAC playoffs with one game remaining in the regular season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brady Hildreth opened the scoring for Cortland with a power play goal at 13:34 of the first period.  Hildreth took a cross-ice feed from Evan Beaudry and buried a shot top corner to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead.
  • Beaudry scored a short-handed goal just two minutes later putting Cortland up 2-0 at the end of one.
  • After a scoreless second period, the Roos were able to close the gap to 2-1 when Kelly took a pass from sophomore Cory Liu and beat at 15:45 of the third.
  • Canton pulled junior goaltender Nate Hopkins in the last minute of the third period but could not manufacture the equalizer.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Roos had a 30-28 edge in shots on goal with sophomore Niko Schoner leading the way with six.
  • Kelly now has six goals on the season, placing him third on the team.
  • Canton was 0/2 on the power play while Cortland was 1/3 and also scored a short-handed goal.
  • The Red Dragons had a slight 33-27 edge at the faceoff dot.
  • Hopkins made 26 saves for the Roos while Ronan Mobley made 30 stops for Cortland.
