Kelly Scores Two, Roos Battle Lakers on Senior Night

Canton, NY – Freshman Logan Kelly continued his hot streak, scoring his fifth and sixth goals in the last three games, but the SUNY Canton men's hockey team dropped a 7-3 decision to SUNYAC foe Oswego State on Friday evening.  Prior to the game, the team honored it's two seniors Brendan Morrow and Colton Sipperley with an on-ice ceremony.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Daniel Colabufo put the Lakers on the board at 5:43 of the first period.
  • A Brandon Cohen power play marker at 9:18 of the first saw Oswego take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
  • Kelly cut the Laker's lead to 2-1, scoring a power play marker by tapping home a rebound past Oswego's Brandon Millberg at 4:48 of the second period.
  • Ryan Burke again put Oswego up by two at 9:11 of the second period.
  • Junior Reilly McKinnon's goal at 11:38 of the second period made the score 3-2.  McKinnon collected another loose puck after a Millberg save and tucked it past the goaltender.  Senior Brendan Morrow and Cory Liu assisted on the play.
  • Less than two minutes later, Cohen scored his second of the evening to put Oswego up 4-2.
  • Kelly scored his second of the evening, stealing an outlet pass from the Lakers and snapping a shot past the blocker of Millberg to send the game into the second intermission down just 4-3.
  • Oswego would close the game out in the third with a power play goal by Colin Vassallo, another goal by Colabufo and Cohen's third goal of the evening to give him the hat trick at 17:30 of the third.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Kelly now has eight goals on the season, placing him third in scoring for the Roos.
  • Canton was 1/2 on the power play and the Lakers were 2/4.
  • The Lakers had a slight 34-27 edge at the faceoff dot with Morrow leading the way with 11 wins.
  • Junior Nate Hopkins made 39 saves while Millberg stopped 12 and teammate Gavin McCarthey made two saves for the Lakers.
WHAT'S NEXT?
This was the final home game and final regular season game for the Roos.  The team has qualified for the sixth seed for the upcoming SUNYAC playoffs and will face Buffalo State on the road, Wednesday, February 26th at 7:00 p.m.
