Roos Use Hot Shooting to Earn SUNYAC Win vs. Plattsburgh

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team shot 54% from the field and 50% from three-point range as four players scored in double figures in a 93-88 SUNYAC win against visiting Plattsburgh State on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The visitors jumped out to an early 16-7 lead six minutes into the game. The Roos chipped away at the lead and used a 7-0 run to get within one (18-17) after a Nate Cohen three-pointer with 11:26 left in the half.
  • The Cardinals extended their lead back to seven (31-24) but a 9-3 Canton spurt gave the Roos their first lead since very early in the game at 34-33 with 4:17 left in the first.
  • The remainder of the half was back-and-forth with the Cardinals taking a slim 47-43 lead into intermission.
  • Cohen and Kevin Goode Jr. led the Roos with 13 and 11 points, respectively, in the first half. Franklin Infante had 14 for Plattsburgh, while Nate Pondexter Jr. tallied 11.
  • The visitors extended their lead to as many as seven (63-56) and led by six with eight minutes remaining.
  • The Roos took the lead at 77-75 with 4:20 remaining after back-to-back threes from Cohen and Tanner Sullivan.
  • The Cardinals tied the game at 82 apiece after a pair of Kareem Welch free throws with 2:32 left.
  • Canton took the lead for good when Bryon Streb knocked down a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession and Sullivan drained another three to put the hosts on top 87-82 with 1:37 to go.
  • After Plattsburgh got the game within one possession (87-84) with 1:29 to play, Streb knocked down a step back jumper to regain the five point advantage with one minute to play.  
  • The Cardinals once again trimmed the lead to three on a Welch driving layup with 25 seconds left, but the Roos responded with a Sullivan layup and Streb knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Cohen led the Roos with 23 points hitting six of his 11 three-pointers while adding three steals. Goode Jr. supplied 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting and recorded game-highs of seven assists and four steals. Streb posted 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting, while Sullivan recorded a career-high 14 points going a perfect 4-for-4 from behind the arc in 12 minutes of second half action.
  • Welch paced Plattsburgh with 30 points, 27 of which came after intermission, as he shot 10-for-14 from the field and 9-for-9 from the line. Infante (18) and Pondexter (13) also scored in double figures.
  • The Roos shot 54% from the field, 50% from three and 72% from the line, while the Cardinals registered marks of 43%, 21% and 92%, respectively.
  • Plattsburgh controlled rebound (40-28), bench points (50-28) and points in the paint (48-34) while shooting 22-for-24 from the line, but the Roos hot shooting proved to be the difference.
