Aniceto Hits Game-Winning Three in Final Seconds in 76-75 Win at Oswego

Oswego, NY – Hope Aniceto drained the game-winning three-pointer with 3.5 seconds remaining as the SUNY Canton women's basketball team earned a thrilling 76-75 SUNYAC road win at Oswego State on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team led by more than four in the opening quarter as Canton held an 18-16 advantage after 10 minutes of action.
  • The Roos opened the second stanza on a 10-2 run to take a 10 point lead (28-18) two minutes into the frame.
  • Oswego trimmed the deficit to just one (30-29) and later tied the game at 36 apiece. The teams went into intermission deadlocked at 42 apiece.
  • Pabo led the Roos with 13 points, while Aniceto had 11 as the duo combined to make five of their nine three-point attempts. Giavanna White-Principio led all players with 20 points for the Lakers, while Shania Iglesias and Macey DeOrdio had 10 first-half points each.  
  • Oswego scored the first point of the second half but from there Canton went on a 7-0 run spearheaded by five points from Kat McRobbie-Taru to open a six point lead (49-43). The Lakers responded with an 8-2 run to knot things up at 51 apiece.
  • The Roos responded with a 10-3 run to extend their lead to seven (61-54) with another McRobbie-Taru three. Canton held a slim 63-61 lead after three quarters as McRobbie-Taru tallied 10 points in the third quarter.
  • Neither team led by more than two points in the entirety of the fourth quarter in a back-and-forth nailbiter.
  • Torie Moore knocked down a pair of free throws with 2:12 remaining to knot the game at 73 apiece. After both teams missed three-point attempts Iglesias gave the hosts a two point lead on a layup with 23.5 seconds to play.
  • The Roos advanced the ball to the front court before Head Coach Chris Klassen called time out to draw up a play. Canton came out of the timeout and held the ball until about 10 seconds and set up a play for a screen as they found an open Aniceto on the right wing as she drained the go-ahead trey with 3.5 seconds to play.
  • Oswego advanced the ball to the front court by calling timeout. The Lakers were unable to execute on the play as Iglesias was forced to heave up a fade away just before time expired that was off the mark as Canton earned the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Pabo led the Roos with 19 points and six assists while Kat McRobbie-Taru posted 17 points and six rebounds. Aniceto tallied 15 points on 3-for-6 shooting from behind the arc, while Natalie Bartle registered nine points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Moore chipped in eight points and five rebounds.
  • With her three made threes Aniceto eclipsed the 200 career made threes mark.
 
  • White-Principio led all players with 28 points and 16 rebounds for the Lakers, while Iglesias recorded a double-double on 20 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. DeOrdio finished with 13 points and five assists.
  • The Roos shot 42% from the field, 40% from three and 80% from the free throw line, while Oswego finished with marks of 37%, 24% and 85%, respectively.
  • Canton had a slim edge in points off turnovers (15-12), while the Lakers had the upper hand in points in the paint (28-14) and second chance points (17-9).

The Roos are back in action on Wednesday when they host SUNY Poly at 7 p.m.
