Kelly Stays Hot as Roos Battle Red Dragons

Cortland, NY – Sophomore Logan Kelly scored his fifth goal of the season and his third of the weekend but the SUNY Canton men's hockey team dropped a 6-1 decision on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Dragons struck first, with Matthew DeSpirit taking advantage of a deflection off a Roos defenseman in front of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead.  The goal was scored at 6:18 of the first period and was assisted by Morley Phillips and Nathan Garnier.
  • Connor Murphy extended Cortland's lead to 2-0, burying a cross-crease pass from Colby Seitz at the 15:17 mark of the first.
  • Less than a minute later, Brady Hildreth wristed a shot top shelf over the extended glove of senior Kelson Hooper to put the Red Dragons up 3-0.
  • Logan Kelly got the Roos on the board at 17:57 of the first, scoring a power play goal from the top right circle off a pass from junior Niko Schoner.
  • After holding Cortland off the scoresheet for most of the second period, the Roos surrendered a powerplay goal by Garnier at 18:12 and an even strength marker by Humphrey with just three seconds left in the stanza.
  • Thomas Rocky's goal at 5:08 of the third period closed out the scoring and gave the Red Dragons a 6-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Cortland outshot the Roos 38-24 with Schoner leading the way with four.
  • The faceoff dot was dead even at 37 all.  Senior Jordyn Mughal led the Roos with 12 wins.
  • Kelly had a productive weekend.  In addition to his power play goal against Cortland, he scored two more last night against Morrisville.
  • Hooper finished with 29 saves in 45 minutes of action.  Junior Nate Hopkins was a perfect 3 for 3 in relief.
  • Shane Shelest made 23 saves for the Red Dragons, earning his fourth conference win of the season.

The Roos have a lengthy holiday break before hitting the road to face Utica University on Sunday, January 4th at 5 p.m.
