Small Nets Game-Tying Goal with Eight Seconds Left, Roos Drop Overtime Heartbreaker to William Smith

Geneva, NY – In a game with plenty of shots but no results, Kylah Small scored the game tying goal with 8.6 seconds left in the third period, but the Willam Smith Herons got the last laugh with the 3v3 overtime game winner at the 1:19 mark of the extra stanza to beat the SUNY Canton women's hockey team 2-1 on Saturday.

THE BASICS
  • Result: William Smith 2, SUNY Canton 1
  • Location:  The Cooler – Geneva, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (5-3-0, 1-3-0 SUNYAC) | William Smith (5-1-0, 3-1-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After playing over six minutes without a shot on goal, the Roos got on the power play and registered five shots in their man-advantage including two each by Sydney Valiquette and Jane Pancoe but could not find the twine.
  • SUNY Canton held the Herons to little offensive zone time in the period, although William Smith had three shots on goal in the final 1:15, but Alyssa Townsley turned them all aside as the period ended with a 0-0 game.
  • After the first twenty minutes, the Roos led shots on goal 10-4. SUNY Canton took no penalties but were 0-for-1 on their lone power play opportunity.
  • Not much happened in the second period either. The goalies on either side held their ground with Townsley and Mia Iwicki on the William Smith side each making eight saves.
  • Shots on goal were 18-12 in favor of SUNY Canton at the conclusion of the second period with the Roos also killing a penalty.
  • With just under 10 minutes left in the game, Kyra O'Keefe had a couple shots, but with 8:42 remaining, the Herons came down and broke the ice with the game's first goal.
  • 27 seconds after this, William Smith got themselves into a precarious situation after Ainsley Lonczak froze the puck leading to a penalty shot, but Isabella Paswaters could not convert on the golden opportunity.
  • Still down 1-0 late into the third, the Roos drew a penalty with 50 seconds left in regulation. Electing to pull Townsley for the 6v4 advantage worked wonders for SUNY Canton as with eight seconds left, Small scored and the Roos tied the game at 1-1.
  • The game headed into overtime with the Roos leading 30-18 on shots on goal.
  • In the 3v3 overtime, the Roos got two early shots from Riley Andzel, but the Herons were rolling after that as they had three shots on goal, but Townsley and the Roos could not stop the fourth after Kelly Howe scored the game winner at 1:19 to go in the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Small scored the goal for the Roos, with Lucy Beal and Anna Pavlasova earning the helpers. Beal became the first player in the SUNYAC to reach 10 points and also leads the league with nine assists. Pavlasova is third in both points and assists with seven and five respectively.
  • Bella Hacker scored the game's first goal in the third period for William Smith and then provided an assist on the overtime-game winner by Howe. Lonczak posted a helper in the Herons win as well.
  • Townsley made 20 saves, allowing two goals in the extended game. Iwicki stopped 29 of 30 for the hosting Herons.
  • Final shots on goal numbers were 30 to 22 in favor of SUNY Canton. In a clean game, the Roos converted on one of two power plays while the Herons were 0-for-1.
