THE BASICS
- Result: SUNY Potsdam 7, SUNY Canton 3
- Location: Terry Martin Ice Arena – Canton, NY
- Records: SUNY Canton (4-1-0, 0-1-0 SUNYAC) | SUNY Potsdam (3-2-0, 1-0-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Potsdam had a few good shifts early, leading to plenty of chances on Roos goaltender Trey Miller. With 5:15 into the game, the Roos were trying to clear the zone, but an errant pass into the high slot area right went right to Owen Watson. Watson was all alone versus Miller, and whipped it bottom right for the game's first goal.
- The Roos had some much better chances from good shifts late in the half, leading to plenty of decent looks on the rush late. The best chance to score was off Logan Kelly, with just over four minutes left in the period which deflected off a Bear right in front of the next and almost went in but Lenny Perno, stopped the puck just in time.
- The first period ended with Potsdam holding their 1-0 lead and a 13-7 shots on goal advantage.
- Roughly four minutes into the second period, the Roos won a puck battle right behind the Potsdam net. Alexander had a nice hit, Schoner pull it out of the fray, and even with drawing a penalty after getting cross-checked from behind, it did not matter as he found Sasenbury across the crease for what was the game tying goal at the time.
- Although the Roos seemed to have all the momentum after the goal, the rest of the period was rough going for the home team. Potsdam restored their one goal lead just 31 seconds later and then scored three more times in the period.
- Potsdam was clicking on all cylinders by the time the second period buzzer sounded, leading 5-1 and 26-20 on shots on goal.
- SUNY Canton came out ready in the third period, giving their all despite the score. This worked wonders for the Roos early on as Scott Cremen sent a shot from the blue line behind the Bears net. Both Brayden Fryfogle and William Forsburg out-muscled and out-worked the Potsdam blue-liners which led to Jordyn Mughal wide open right in front of the crease for the Roos second goal 2:41 into the third stanza.
- With 15 minutes remaining, Sasenbury took the puck out of the Roos zone and skated with it all the way through the neutral zone and into Potsdam's end. Despite being outnumbered, Sasenbury took it to the left face off dot and flung a shot. The flick of the wrist was a beauty and so was the location as it was right between the leg pad and glove of Perno and found the back of the twine as the Roos were now just trailing 5-3.
- Throughout the next 11 minutes, Perno and the Bears were faced with six shots on goal and one that ringed off the pipe, but SUNY Canton had nothing to show for it.
- The Roos pulled Kelson Hooper from the net with 3:54 remaining, but Potsdam got an empty net goal only 17 seconds after and then a second one with 1:33 left. The Bears went on to win by a final score of 7-3 in Canton.
