THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 2, #7/8 Trine 1
  • Location: Terry Martin Ice Arena – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (1-0-0) | #7/8 Trine (0-1-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trine got on the board at 8:19 of the opening period when Brody Simko played the puck off the boards behind the Canton goal as the puck went right to Logan Turstenau who roofed a shot top shelf for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Thunder held a 9-4 shots on goal advantage in the opening period taking a 1-0 lead to first intermission.
  • Trine held a slim 8-3 shots advantage in the second period as neither team was able to find the back of the net.
  • Canton came out of the second intermission with some extra energy and that paid off just 53 seconds into the period. Reilly McKinnon played the puck off the boards at mid-ice to Brayden Fryfogle who dropped a pass to Evan Pringle skating into the offensive zone. Pringle dangled a defenseman and lifted a shot top shelf making the water bottle pop to knot things at one apiece.
  • The Roos took their first lead of the game at 11:12 of the third frame with the skater advantage. McKinnon found Niko Schoner at the offensive blue line, and he skated in wristing a shot off the inside of the right post and in for the lead. Colton Alexander also picked up a helper on the play.
  • The SUNY Canton defense was stingy down the stretch only allowing one shot on goal as the Roos held on for the top 10 win. Canton outshot Trine 10-3 in the third period.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Thunder held a slim 20-17 shots on goal advantage in the game. The Roos were 1-for-5 on the power play, while killing off all five of their penalties.
  • The win is the third highest ranked opponent the team has beaten in program history.  The Roos defeated No. 6 Geneseo 2-1 on January 7, 2023 and took down No. 3 Adrian 6-4 on December 30, 2018.
  • Five different players registered a point for the Roos, all in the third period, paced by two from McKinnon.
  • Trey Miller stopped 19 shots in his first win of the season, including 16 over the first two periods.
