Coulter, Frigon Lead Roos in SUNYAC Opener Versus Oneonta

Canton, NY – Emerson Coulter led the Roos with 13 kills and Nadia Frigon had a career-high 21 assists but the Oneonta Red Dragons finished each of the match's three sets strong to sweep the SUNY Canton volleyball team in both team's SUNYAC opener Friday night at the Roos House.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Oneonta 3, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: Roos House – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (7-12, 0-1 SUNYAC) | Oneonta (11-6, 1-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first set began 6-6, but a 4-1 run from the Roos got their lead up to 10-7 with Brooke Hite, Abby Raven, and Isabella Cruz each chipping in with kills in this run.
  • The Red Dragons battled back, eventually taking a 14-12 lead thanks to a 7-2 scoring run.
  • The set remained close with each team standing at 19-19, but the Roos could not score in crunch time, eventually falling 25-19 after the Red Dragons scored the final six points of the set.
  • Neither team was able to pull ahead at the start of the second set with the Roos largest lead being very early at 5-1.
  • The Roos trailed 16-14, but then three straight from Oneonta gave the Red Dragons their largest lead of the set at 19-14.
  • Just when it looked like the Red Dragons were about to win big in the second set, the Roos went on a monster run, bringing the energy back to the nearly 200-strong crowd. SUNY Canton scored eight of the next 10 points, backed by four kills from Coulter to take a 22-21 lead late.
  • However, in a similar fashion to set one, the Red Dragons got all the game's final points, putting up four straight to win narrowly 25-22.
  • The third set began rough for the home team as they were trailing 8-3, but it was all Roos in the middle part of the set. SUNY Canton took their first lead of the set 11-10 after Coulter pounded three straight kills. This was a smaller part of a 14-4 SUNY Canton run that gave them their largest lead of the game at 17-12.
  • The Roos later led 21-16, but the trend of the Red Dragons finishing strong continued into the third set. Oneonta tied the game at 22 and took the lead 24-23 a few points later.
  • Hite had a big kill to force a 24-24 tie, but the Red Dragons won the final set in extended fashion 26-24.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Coulter spearheaded the Roos offense leading the team with 13 kills and three aces while hitting .333 (13-3-30). Hite and Raven had eight and seven kills respectively.
  • In addition to Frigon's 21 assists, the freshman also had a team-high 11 digs to lead the Roos defensively. Coulter had 10 digs, and Daycee Bane also was in double figures in digs with 10 while contributing a pair of service aces.
  • Colleen McCabe led all Red Dragons with 13 kills. Shea Landversicht had seven kills while Anna Moller topped the team with 24 digs.
  • The biggest factor in the match was the hitting percentages. The Red Dragons hit a blistering .308 across the three sets (37-5-104), which helped them sweep despite the Roos having more kills (42-37), assists (37-33), and digs (55-53). SUNY Canton's hitting percentage was .164 (42-22-122).
