Bane Leads Roos Defense with 17 Digs Against First-Place Cortland

Canton, NY – Senior libero Daycee Bane led the Roos defense with 17 digs, but the SUNY Canton volleyball team fell at home in three sets to the first-place Cortland Red Dragons to begin the last home SUNYAC weekend series on Friday.

The Roos got better and better each set, losing 25-16 in the first, 25-17 in the second, and finaly 25-22 in the final set.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Cortland 3, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: Roos House – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (8-17, 1-6 SUNYAC) | Cortland (18-6, 6-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos were neck and neck with the league leaders early with an 8-7 lead after an Abby Raven service ace.
  • However, SUNY Canton found themselves playing from behind the rest of the way with the Red Dragons scoring the next four points and pulling away quickly after that.
  • The Roos only scored back-to-back points on one more occasion in the set, that being a kill by Madison Bigelow and an attack error by the Red Dragons. Cortland went on to win 25-16.
  • The tight battle early in the first set was not the case in the second as the Red Dragons commanded a 7-1 lead and later were up 20-10.
  • The Roos made some noise late by scoring seven points in a 10-point stretch with a kill from Isabella Cruz mixed in to trail just 23-17, but Cortland regrouped and won set number two 25-17.
  • The third set early on was one of the best set the Roos had played on the year, with the hosts battling in a see-saw game with lots of energy and intensity between them and the 17-6 Red Dragons.
  • Raven and Brooke Hite had early kills to help the Roos earn a 10-9 lead and then with Cortland leading 16-15 a bit later, SUNY Canton pushed ahead with a 7-1 run, taken over by Emerson Coulter serving, and two kills each by Bigelow and Raven to make it 22-17 in favor of the home team. The Roos had 10 kills in the set at this point, more than both of the first two sets combined.
  • Despite this though, the Roos ran into trouble with Cortland getting three straight points after this. Roos head coach Cooper Colesante took a timeout, but it did not solve matters as the Red Dragons pulled off the road sweep with five more points to win the final set 25-22 and remain undefeated in league play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Seven Roos had multiple kills in the game with Coulter and Raven leading the way with four each.
  • Defensively, Bane accounted for nearly half of the team's 41 digs with 17. McKenna Pelech had five blocks, and Tionna Edghill had a career-high four.
  • Kira Pirrera and Lauren Millspaugh had 13 and nine kills respectively for Cortland. Alyssa Rich recorded 16 digs and two service aces in the Red Dragons road win.
  • In a defensive minded game, Cortland hit .140 (37-22-107) and the Roos were at a .036 clip (19-16-84). The Red Dragons also edged the Roos in aces (12-3), assists (35-19), and digs (42-41).
