Coulter and Hite Nail Down Seven Kills Each in Volleyball’s Game at Fredonia

Fredonia, NY – Emerson Coulter and Brooke Hite had seven kills a-piece, but the SUNY Canton volleyball team was swept by the Fredonia State Blue Devils Friday night in their first of two games this weekend.

The Roos got a little bit closer to achieving victory in every set, losing the first 25-11, the second 25-19, and then making a late comeback but falling just short in the third set 25-23.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Fredonia 3, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location: Dods Hall – Fredonia, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (8-15, 1-4 SUNYAC) | Fredonia (7-12, 2-2 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Fredonia was ready to play in front of their home crowd with the Blue Devils scoring the first five points right out of the gates then later taking a 19-5 lead in the first set.
  • Tionna Edghill, Abby Raven, and Isabella Cruz all had kills late, but the Roos were still bested 25-11 in set one.
  • The second set was infinitely more competitive with the two teams matching each other in the first 20 points with a 10-10 score.
  • Fredonia pulled ahead 17-13, but the Roos battled back within one after three straight points capped by a kill from Hite.
  • Despite this though, the Blue Devils ran away with it after a 7-1 run gave them a 7-point lead, then they finished the set 25-19 a few points later to go up 2-0 in the match.
  • In the third set, SUNY Canton got out in front 9-7 as they bothered Fredonia's hitters up front leading to six early attack errors from the Blue Devils.
  • However, right after this, the Roos were the ones committing attack errors and the hosts earned themselves 10 of the next 11 points to get ahead 17-10.
  • The Roos were down 21-12, but then SUNY Canton clawed their way back with a big 11-3 run. Emerson Coulter and McKenna Pelech had kills early in this run and Raven took over late with three kills.
  • SUNY Canton only trailed 24-23, but Fredonia called a timeout, then took the set on the point coming out of the break as the Roos third-set comeback fell short by the slimmest of margins.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • In addition to Coulter's seven kills, the sophomore was also second on the team with 14 digs and added a pair of blocks in the contest. Hite was a solid .238 in attack percentage (7-2-21) and Raven added six kills and six digs for the Roos.
  • Daycee Bane led the SUNY Canton defense with 18 digs with the libero also tallying four assists. Lauren Norman had 11 assists to compliment her eight digs.
