Coulter Sets New Career High with 19 Kills, Volleyball Gets First Ever SUNYAC Road Win at Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY – Emerson Coulter gave herself a new career-high in kills with 19 and the SUNY Canton volleyball team earned their first SUNYAC win of the season and first SUNYAC road victory in program history with a 3-2 win over the Plattsburgh State Cardinals Saturday afternoon.

The Roos won in all the odd-number sets and the Cardinals the even-numbered ones. SUNY Canton took set one 25-16, dropped the second set 25-14, narrowly won the third 25-22, lost the fourth 25-18, and then finished off Plattsburgh with a 15-11 victory in the final set.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 3, Plattsburgh 2
  • Location: Memorial Hall Gymnasium – Plattsburgh, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (8-14, 1-3 SUNYAC) | Plattsburgh (7-10, 1-2 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Plattsburgh had all the momentum early with a 7-3 lead but a kill by Brooke Hite and an ace by Isabella Cruz tied the contest at 11.
  • With the set at 13-13, SUNY Canton went on a 9-1 run to completely take control of the set with Cruz, Abby Raven, and Coulter earning kills in this stretch.
  • A service ace by Lauren Norman gave the Roos the match point as they started the match on a high note, winning 25-16 in set one.
  • The Cardinals were doubling up SUNY Canton early in the second set with the score at 10-5.
  • The Plattsburgh lead only continued to swell as they later led 18-9, and scored the final five points of the set to win 25-14.
  • The third set was utter domination early for the Roos with SUNY Canton scoring the first eight points of the set. Early on, Coulter had seven kills which was over twice as many points as the Cardinals had in the set with the score at 12-3.
  • Despite the Roos having a double-digit lead in the set, Plattsburgh did not go down quietly as they got within three points at 23-20, but even with the effort, a couple of late attack errors gave the Roos a 2-1 lead in the match after they won the set 25-22.
  • The fourth set was tied at 8 early on, but a 5-0 spurt from the Cardinals pulled them ahead 13-8. The home team went on another 5-0 run a little while later and suddenly SUNY Canton was behind 19-11.
  • The Roos managed to score five of the next six points with two kills by Raven and one from Coulter to bring the game to 20-16, but Plattsburgh hung on to win 25-18.
  • In the first-to-15 fifth set, the Roos went on a 7-2 run early on to double Plattsburgh's points 8-4. Service aces were the name of the game with half of SUNY Canton's first eight points coming off two aces by Nadia Frigon and two by Coulter.
  • The closest the home team got the rest of the way was 12-10. The Roos final three points were off a kill by Hite, one by Coulter, and an attack error to take the final set 15-11 in the lengthy five-set win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Coulter led the Roos with her career-high 19 kills, hitting .385 across the five-set match (19-4-39). The sophomore also had three service aces and 17 digs. Her 19 kills are tied for the fourth most of any Roo in a single match in the D-III era. Abby Raven was very efficient with nine kills and hitting .296 (9-1-27). McKenna Pelech had six blocks in the game.
  • Daycee Bane had a strong defensive showing with 23 digs. Cruz logged eight kills, and 15 digs while Norman had a double-double with 20 assists and 12 digs.

  • Despite the result, the Cardinals beat the Roos in just about every statistical category including kills (59-48), assists (56-43), and digs (86-81). Hitting percentage was slightly in favor of Plattsburgh with the Cardinals hitting .156 (59-31-180), and the Roos hitting .143 (48-24-168).
