Balanced Attack Leads Canton Men’s Basketball Past Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – The Roos used offensive balance as five different players reached double figures in an 86-71 men's basketball SUNYAC win at SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos roared out to an early 22-7 lead just over eight minutes in after Nate Cohen knocked down all three of his free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt.
  • Canton led by as many as 17 (26-9) in the opening half but the Bears closed the first half on a 7-0 run to get within 37-32 at intermission.
  • The Roos scored the first basket of the second half but Potsdam followed with an 8-0 run to extend their overall spurt to 15-2 taking a 40-39 lead.
  • The teams were tied at 56 apiece midway through the second half. The Roos took the lead for good at 60-59 after a Bryon Streb layup with 7:18 remaining. Canton used an 8-0 run to open a 66-59 advantage and from there Potsdam would never get closer than three as the Roos pulled away for the 15 point win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Goode Jr. led the Roos with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting adding a game-high five steals. Eli Larson recorded his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Bryon Streb finished with 18 points and seven rebounds on 7-for-11 shooting. Jevonte Williams (13) and Cohen (12) also scored in double figures for the Roos.
  • Nicholas Cortez led all players with 23 points for Potsdam, while Mohammad Sylla (12) and Parker Kelly (10) reached double figures.
  • The Roos shot a blistering 57% from the field while holding the Bears to 37% shooting.
  • Canton controlled rebounds (38-30), points in the paint (48-22) and points off turnovers (16-10).The Bears had a slim edge in bench points (13-7) and fast break points (20-14).

The Roos return to SUNYAC action on Tuesday when they visit New Paltz at 7:30 p.m.
