Lalonde & Lenihan Lead Roos Against #9 Cortland

Cortland, NY – Junior Danika Lalonde scored a first period goal and sophomore Molly Lenihan made 34 saves but the SUNY Canton women's hockey team dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime to ninth-ranked SUNY Cortland on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lalonde opened the scoring for the Roos at 12:11 of the first period, snapping a high shot that was stopped Molly Goergen's blocker but flipped above the goaltender and into the net behind her.  The goal as assisted by sophomore Jordan Caroccio and senior Desiree Snook.
  • Lenihan and Goergen both kept their opponents off the score sheet for the second period with 10 saves each.
  • The Roos played shutout hockey for almost 59 minutes of the game but with Cortland's goalie pulled and the extra attacker on the ice, Mia Hlasnick shot the puck through a screen and over Lenihan's blocker to tie the game 1-1.
  • In overtime, both teams traded chances but it was the Red Dragons who completed the comeback with Drew Kopek picking the top corner to give Cortland the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Lalonde's goal was her third of the year.  She is currently first on the team in scoring and second in points with six.
  • Junior Kyra O'Keefe and sophomore Anna Pavlasova led the Roos with five shots each.  Pavlasova was credited with five blocked shots.
  • The Roos successfully killed off all three penalty kill chances did not have a power play opportunity.
  • Cortland had the edge at the face off dot winning 36 of 56 draws.
  • Lenihan finished with 34 saves boosting her season save percentage to .934
