Roos Battle Cardinals in Conference Clash

Plattsburgh, NY – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team outscored host Plattsburgh State in the second half but was unable to overcome a double-digit deficit in a 79-72 SUNYAC loss on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped out to an early 8-2 lead two minutes in after a rare four-point play from Jevonte Williams after draining a three and free throw following a foul.
  • The Cardinals scored 15 of the game's next 16 points to open a 17-9 lead nine minutes into the game.
  • Plattsburgh led by as many as 13 in the opening half but Canton was able to trim the deficit to just eight (36-28) at intermission.
  • The Cardinals opened their largest lead of the game following at 58-42 following an Ikechukwu Ezike dunk with 10:45 remaining.
  • The Roos chipped away at the deficit cutting the Plattsburgh lead to seven following a Chris Nastasi jumper with three minutes to play. Canton got within four (73-69) following a Nate Cohen three with 39 seconds left but the hosts went 6-for-6 from the line to seal the win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Eli Larson led the Roos with 17 points and eight rebounds shooting 6-for-11 from the field, while Bryon Streb totaled 13 points and a game-high six assists to go with four rebounds and three steals. Williams posted 10 points and five rebounds, while Chris Nastasi registered a career-high nine points. Edram Gbekou chipped in seven points, three steals and three rebounds, while Hansen Bagdonas totaled six points.Gbekou and Bagdonas both tied their season-highs for points. 
  • Kevin Tabb led the way with 18 points for the Cardinals, while Ezike (16) and Kareem Welch (14) reached double figure points and combined for 14 rebounds.
  • The teams shot nearly at the same mark from the field with the Roos holding a slim 44% to 43% edge, but Canton knocked down 35% of their threes compared to 15% for Plattsburgh.
  • The Cardinals controlled rebounds (44-33), bench points (42-27), second chance points (10-4) and fast break points (18-13).
