Balcom & Marshall Lead Roos at Nazareth Tri-Match

Rochester, NY - Seniors Sarah Balcom and Alexas Marshall recorded a combined 31 kills as the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at Nazareth University on Saturday afternoon.

The Roos lost their first match against the Wildcats 3-1 (12-25, 25-11, 13-25, 16-25) and were defeated by the Golden Flyers 3-0 (23-25, 23-25, 21-25) in their second contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Match 1 – BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats raced out to a 13-3 lead early in the set before a kill by junior Sammie Frank closed the gap to 14-7. Another JWU Providence run put them up 21-10 before closing out the set 25-12.
  • In the second set it was all Roos as a Marshall kill put them on top 10-4.  An ace by freshman Emerson Coulter extended the lead to 13-5.  Canton rattled off six-straight points, punctuated by a Daycee Bane ace to go up 24-10 and the Roos closed it out 25-11.
  • The Wildcats controlled the third set, leading 9-3 on a Bailey Koopman kill.  A pair of Balcom kills kept the Roos in the set at 20-11 but the Wildcats scored five of the next seven points to win 25-13.
  • A Frank kill early in the fourth tied the set at 4-4 early before a Wildcat run put them up 13-7.  An ace by Bane kept Canton close at 14-12, but Johnson & Wales scored nine of the next 11 points to take a commanding 23-14 lead and they would wi            n the set 25-16.
  • Balcom led the Roos with 10 kills, Marshall and sophomore Bria Hunter had eight each.  Coulter had a team-high 12 digs and Frank let the Roos with 24 assists.
 
Match 2 – BOX SCORE
  • The Golden Flyers led the first set early, 8-4 on a Zipporah Sparkman kill.  Junior Brooke Hite's kill got the Roos within two, 11-9.  A four-point Nazareth run put them up 15-9, but five straight points by Canton, including two Balcom kills closed the gap to 16-15.  The two teams would trade runs over the remainder of the set, but Nazareth won the close set 25-23.
  • The second set would prove to be another close one, as a Coulter ace kept the Roos within two at 9-7.  Five straight by the Golden Flyers put them up 17-10 but Canton battled back on a Coulter kill to make the score 19-15.  Nazareth scored four straight to lead 23-15 before the Roos showed resilience, scoring seven straight, including two kills by Frank, and trailing by just one point 23-22.  Nazareth would ultimately prevail, winning the set 25-23.
  • After trading points in the third set, a Balcom kill tied it up 12-12.  An Emerson ace kept the Roos within two at 20-18, but the Golden Flyers would score four of the final five points to win 25-21 and earn the sweep.
  • Marshall led the Roos with seven kills and three blocks, Balcom would add six additional kills.  Coulter and senior Sarah Towles had a team-high 11 digs and Frank recorded 21 assists.
