Coulter and Balcom Lead Roos Over North Country Foes

Canton, NY - Freshman Emerson Coulter recorded 30 kills and senior Sarah Balcom added 21 more as the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team defeated both St. Lawrence University and SUNY Potsdam on Friday.

The Roos swept the Saints 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-16) in the first match and engineered a comeback to defeat the Bears 3-2 (25-14, 17-25, 28-30, 25-15, 15-11) in their second contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
Match 1 – BOX SCORE 
  • The first set opened with both teams battling back-and-forth, with the Roos taking an early 7-4 lead on an ace by sophomore Bria Hunter.  The Saints would later go on a 6-2 run, holding a 17-13 advantage.  A Hunter kill would tie the set 19-19.  From there the Roos would pull away, taking the set 25-23 on a kill by senior Sammie Frank.
  • St. Lawrence led 14-6 midway through the second set before the Roos closed the gap to 19-15 on a kill by junior Brooke Hite.  A 7-2 Roo run put them on top 22-21 and Canton would close it out 25-23 on a Coulter kill.
  • The Saints led 10-6 early on a Kori Meissner ace, but it was all Roos from that point, scoring with a balanced attack including three Hite kills and two more from Coulter.  The Roos took the set 25-16 and earned the three-set sweep.
  • Coulter led the Roos with 16 kills, senior Sarah Towles recorded 11 digs and Frank added 22 assists.
 
Match 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Potsdam led 10-6 early in the first set before the Roos ran off 10 of 12 points, capped by a Balcom ace to lead 16-12.  A Hunter ace pushed the advantage to 21-13 and Canton closed out the set 25-14.
  • In the second set, it was the Roos who led 12-8 early on a Hite kill.  The Bears went on an 11-2 run, leading 19-14 and would win the set 25-17.
  • The third set would be a marathon.  After trading points early on, a Hite kill tied the set at 9-9.  Potsdam took a brief 16-13 lead before a Balcom ace got the Roos within two, 19-17.  More back-and-forth play would eventually see the Roos tie the set 24-24 on a Hunter ace.  Canton led 28-27 on a Hite kill but the Bears would score three straight to win 30-28.
  • An early Coulter kill pushed the Roos to a 5-3 advantage in the fourth set.  The Bears would tie the score 8-8 on an Emily Prest kill.  Another Coulter kill put the Roos on top 18-13 with the Roos eventually taking the set 25-15.
  • In the winner takes all fifth set, it was Potsdam who led 4-0 early before two Balcom kills and another by Hunter put the Roos up 6-5.  Canton continued to push the lead and eventually won the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
  • Balcom led the Roos with 16 kills, Coulter finished with 14 and 10 digs, and Marshall recorded 11 kills.  Frank and Towles each had a team-high 15 digs.

The Roos travel to Oswego State and face Hilbert College and SUNY Brockport on Saturday, September 21st at noon and 2:00 p.m. respectively.
