Marshall & Coulter Record Eight Kills Each as Roos Sweep Elmira in Season Opener

Canton, NY – Senior Alexas Marshall and freshman Emerson Coulter led the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team with eight kills each as the Roos swept (25-13, 25-17, 25-12) host Elmira College in the team's season opener on Friday evening.
 
New SUNY Canton Head Coach Cooper Colesante earned his first win as a women's volleyball head coach in his debut with the Roos.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped out to a 10-5 lead in Friday's opening set against the host Soaring Eagles. Canton used a 7-1 run to gain a 21-10 advantage cruising to a 25-13 win in the opening frame. The team hit a blistering .625 with 12 kills and just two errors on 16 swings.
  • Play was fairly even early in the second stanza with Canton holding an 11-10 edge midway through the set. The Roos ran off five of the next six points to take a 16-11 advantage following a Brooke Hite kill. The Soaring Eagles would never get closer than three points the remainder of the way as Canton secured a second set win, 25-17. The Roos hit .500 in the second stanza flooring 10 kills without an error.
  • Canton led 12-7 halfway through the third but used a 9-2 run to open a 21-9 lead closing out the match with a 25-12 win in the third set.  
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Canton featured a balanced attack in their season opener as Marshall (8) and Coulter tallied eight kills each with Bria Hunter chipping in six kills. The trio were exceptionally effective offensively registering hitting percentages of .727, .538 and .667, respectively. Coulter also pinpointed a match-best five service aces. Sammie Frank assisted a match-high 21 kills and Sarah Towles led the way defensively with a match-best 11 digs.  
  • Madi Conti paced the Soaring Eagles with seven kills, while Morgan Richardson added six.
  • The Roos hit .474 in the match with 31 kills compared to just four errors. Meanwhile, Elmira had 27 kills but committed 19 hitting errors. Canton had 30 digs compared to just 13 for the hosts.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Saturday when they take on Smith College and Alfred State at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively, in the second day of the Elmira College Invitational
