Schoner’s Hat Trick Leads Roos Over Fredonia In 6-4 Barnburner

Canton, NY – Sophomore Niko Schoner scored a hat trick and freshman Nolan Zotter scored a goal and added two assists as the SUNY Canton men's hockey team defeated Fredonia State 6-4 in a SUNYAC contest on Friday evening.

THE BASICS
  • Result: SUNY Canton 6 | Fredonia State 4
  • Location: Terry Martin Arena – Canton, NY
  • Records: SUNY Canton (3-4-0, 1-2-0 SUNYAC) | Fredonia State (2-5-0, 1-2-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped on the scoreboard at 10:18 of the first period, as junior Trystan Mughal took a pass from Hunter Svicki, skated to the top of the right circle and wristed a shot past Fredonia goaltender Charles-Anthony Bareau.  Michael Palandra earned the secondary assist.
  • Schoner scored his first goal just 19 seconds into the second period, deking Bareau at the top of the crease and depositing the puck five-hole to put the Roos up 2-0.  Zotter assisted on the play.
  • Adrian Franco snatched up a turnover deep in the Blue Devil's end and snapped a wrister in tight, glove-side high at 6:54 of the second to give the Roos a 3-0 lead.
  • A cross-crease feed from senior Brendan Morrow was buried by Schoner at 11:32 of the period to put Canton on top 4-0.
  • Fredonia responded at 14:27 of the second, converting a two-on-one break with Dillon Schmidt blasting a Nolan Ring pass into the net, putting the Blue Devils on the board 4-1.
  • The Blue Devils would need just 37 seconds to score their next goal, with Johnny Ramoundos poking home his own rebound to make it 4-2.
  • Zotter would stem the tide at 17:59 of the second, tapping in a loose puck in the front of the crease to give the Roos the 5-2 advantage heading into the third.  Sophomore Colton Sipperley and freshman Jake Howard were awarded assists on the goal.
  • While the scoring onslaught slowed in the third, Xavier Fortin gave the Blue Devils hope with just over three minutes to play in the game, slipping a puck just behind junior goaltender Kelson Hooper and closing the gap to 5-3.
  • Luke Morris made things tight, scoring a power play goal for Fredonia at 17:54 of the third, jamming the puck from under a prone Hooper.
  • But Schoner was able to score an empty-net goal with 25 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Roos by a 6-4 margin.
