Williams Leads Roos Against Highlanders

Canton, NY – Jevonte Williams scored 15 points as five Roos had seven or more points in a 94-63 non-conference loss to Houghton on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Canton jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead just over five minutes in following a My'Kell Kaigler three-pointer. The Roos still led by two at 16-14 midway through the half after a Chris Nastasi trey.
  • Houghton opened a double-digit advantage at 37-27 after a Preston Thomas layup with two minutes left in the first half. The Highlanders led 40-29 at intermission.
  • The visitors extended their lead to 15 (52-37) four minutes into the second half. However, the Roos battled back using a12-2 run to get within five (54-49) after a Kaigler hit from beyond the arc.
  • Houghton responded with a 14-2 run of their own to open a 17 point lead en route to the convincing win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Williams led Canton with 15 points, four rebounds shooting 6-for-14 from the field, while Eli Larson had nine points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals shooting 3-for-8. Kaigler added eight points, four rebounds and hit both of his threes and free throws, while Nastasi and Edram Gbekou tallied seven points each. Bryon Streb chipped in five points, five rebounds and six assists.
  • Lou Bellamy paced Houghton with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Thomas had 17 points and nine boards. Jake Verschoyle (15), Jajuan Preaster (14) and Christian Sage (12) also scored in double figures.
  • Houghton shot 46% from the field and 25% from three, while Canton had marks of 34% and 22%.
  • The Highlanders held the upper hand in rebounds (54-40), points in the paint (52-34), fast break points (24-13), points off turnovers (20-8) and second chance points (18-10).

The Roos are back in action Saturday, November 30th when they visit Hilbert College at 2 p.m.
