Sarah Balcom combined for 28 kills but the SUNY Canton women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Misericordia University and Rowan University on Saturday afternoon.
The Roos lost their first match against the Cougars 3-0 (19-25, 16-25, 22-25) and were defeated by the Owls 3-0 (19-25, 11-25, 14-25) in their second contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Match 1 –
BOX SCORE
- The teams traded points early in the set before the Cougars pulled ahead 9-5 on a Jennifer Nicometo kill. Three straight aces by Hunter pulled the Roos even at 11-11. The set remained close and was tied at 18-18 on a block by Hunter and Balcom. Misericordia scored seven of the next eight to win the set 25-19.
- An early service ace put the Cougars up 4-2 before the Roos responded scoring five of eight points including a kill by freshman Emerson Coulter to tie the set 7-7. Canton would keep things close until the Cougars went on a 5-0 run to lead 21-15 and would close out the set 25-16
- Junior Brooke Hite put the Roos up 7-5 with an early kill in the third set. After a Cougar run saw them regain the lead, Canton fought back to tie the set 13-13 on a Coulter kill. Misericordia held two five-point leads at 20-15 and 24-19 but the Roos battled to close the gap each time, including scoring three straight to get within two 24-22 before the Cougars won the set 25-22 to complete the 3-0 sweep.
- Coulter led the Roos with nine kills, Hunter and Balcom finished with six each. Senior Sarah Towles recorded 10 digs and junior Sammie Frank had 22 assists to lead Canton.
Match 2 –
BOX SCORE
- A Coulter kill early in the first set put the Roos on top 4-3. A Hunter kill extended the lead to 8-6. Seven straight points by the Owls put them up 13-8 before a kill and ace by Hite got the Roos within three. Another Rowan run made the score 20-13 and they would go on to win the set 25-19.
- After the Roos led 3-2 early on a Balcom kill, the Owls would tie the set and run their own lead to 13-4. That lead would prove to be insurmountable and the Roos dropped the set 25-11.
- Canton would again take an early lead 2-0 before Rowan scored 10 straight to lead 10-2. The Roos could not get closer and dropped the third set 25-14.
- Hunter led the Roos with nine kills and Balcom had seven. Coulter was credited with 12 digs and Frank registered 24 assists.
