Frank Leads Roos on Opening Night of McDaniel Tournament

Westminster, MD – Sophomore Sammie Frank continued her strong play, leading the SUNY Canton Women's volleyball team in its first match of the McDaniel Tournament on Friday night.  Frank would finish the night with six aces, 11 assists, three kills and two digs, but the Roos dropped a 3-0 decision to host McDaniel College.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Roos jumped out to a 10-0 lead, a run that included four aces by Frank.  The Green Terror closed the gap to 12-8 on a Mackenzie Mitchell kill.  Consecutive kills by junior Alexas Marshall and freshman Bria Hunter put SUNY Canton up 21-15 before McDaniel scored 10 straight points to win the set 25-21.
  • In the second set, McDaniel went ahead 13-3 early.  The Roos climbed within 20-15 but the Green Terror would close the set out 25-15.
  • An early 4-0 McDaniel lead was erased by a 4-point Roo run, caped by a Sarah Towles ace, tying the set 4-4.  The next 12 points were back and forth leaving the score tied at 10 all.  The Green Terror would score 14 of the next 17 points to lead 24-13.  Back-to-back kills by Towles and junior Sarah Balcom would get the Roos closer but ultimately McDaniel would take the set 25-15 and sweep the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • McDaniel led in kills (35-16), aces (17-8) and digs (29-17).  SUNY Canton held the advantage in blocks (4-3).
  • Hunter finished the night with four kills while Balcom and Frank each finished with three.  Additionally, Frank tallied 11 assists and six aces.
  • Towles recorded eight digs and two aces.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos will take on Mount Aloysius College and Goucher College at noon and 2 p.m., respectively, on the second day of the tournament.
