Roos Top Bobcats in Home Opener

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton women's volleyball team defeated Paul Smith's College in four sets on Wednesday evening in their first home match of the season.  Sophomore Sammie Frank had a monster night with seven aces, 15 digs, 26 assists and four kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • The Roos sprinted out to an 8-0 lead, based largely on an incredible six straight aces by Frank.  The Bobcats battled back to get within three at 13-10, but SUNY Canton extended the lead to 23-15 on a Brooke Hite kill and closed out the match 25-16.
  • The second set remained much closer throughout, with the Roos trailing briefly 3-2 early. They never trailed again, gaining a 10-6 advantage on a kill by junior Sarah Balcom and leading 17-14 on an Alexas Marshall kill.  Another Marshall kill put SUNY Canton up 23-18 and an ace by sophomore Kiley Zicari put the Roos over the top at 25-21.
  • The third set saw Paul Smith's take early control on an Alli Cherry ace and lead 5-2.  The Roos got back in the game on an Emily Dreyer kill to lead 7-5.  The Bobcats took a 15-10 lead off a Cherry kill and took the match 25-17 on an Cherry ace.
  • In the fourth set the Bobcats again controled early, jumping out to an 8-2 advantage.  The Roos responded, closing the gap to 10-9 on a Balcom kill and ran off six more points to go ahead 15-10 on a Cadin Taggart ace.  SUNY Canton won the set 25-18.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Bobcats had a slight advantage in kills 36 to 33.  Marshall led the Roos with nine and freshman Bria Hunter had six.
  • The Roos led in aces 14-12 with Frank's seven leading the way followed by Taggart's three.
  • Frank's 15 digs led SUNY Canton, with senior Bethanie Gratton and junior Sarah Towles posting eight each.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos head to Maryland for the McDaniel Tournament and will face host McDaniel College on Friday night at 7 p.m.
