Roos Battle Mustangs in NAC Opener

Canton, NY – The SUNY Canton men's soccer team fought an even match for nearly 75 minutes with SUNY Morrisville on Saturday afternoon, but a Mustang goal with just 15 minutes remaining ended up being the difference in a tight 1-0 contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Michael Gavette had an excellent scoring opportunity in the 26th minute, corralling a misplayed clearing attempt and firing a shot into Mustang goalkeeper Caleb Lucero.
  • Both teams trading solid opportunities in the second half before Mateo Barahona buried a header on a beautifully placed corner kick from Olvin Yanes to make the score 1-0.
  • The Roos had a late scoring opportunity with just under seven minutes remaining when Shareef Stokely placed a hard shot on Lucero hoping for a rebound or deflection but the keeper was up to the task and swallowed it up.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Both teams recorded six shots on net with Gavette and junior Dylan Vanderpool each recording two.
  • Senior Owen Kwong finished with five saves, Lucero gathered up six.
