Todd Stops 22 Shots as Mariners Finish Conference Play Unbeaten

Castine, ME – Hayden Todd made 22 saves on the day and four different Roos scored two goals each, but the SUNY Canton men's lacrosse team fell 17-9 to Maine Maritime Academy (12-3), who finishes the regular season unbeaten in league play at 8-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The hosts held a slim 2-1 lead following a low scoring first quarter. Austin Mesler netted the lone Canton goal in the quarter scoring man-up.
  • Play was once again extremely even in the second stanza with the Mariners holding a slight 4-3 advantage taking a 6-4 lead into intermission. With the Roos trailing 5-1 at the time Caeden Goodnough scored back-to-back goals and Alex Jacobs added a man-down score.
  • The third quarter ultimately proved to be the difference as the hosts outscored Canton 5-0 over the 15-minute stretch to turn a 6-4 lead into an 11-4 lead.
  • Canton hung tough getting outscored by just one in the fourth quarter but was unable to mount a comeback.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mesler and Goodnough paced the Roos with two goals and an assist each, while Jacobs and Michael Newcomb scored two each. Carter Pooler had Canton's only other score of the game. Devin Guerriero went 14-for-26 on face offs and picked up five ground balls, while Holden Hewlett also had five ground balls.
  • Jayden Wilson led the Mariner attack with five goals and an assist, while Sam Nichol had four goals and one assist.
  • Garrett Ruszkowski made 10 saves allowing four goals over the first 51:10 in the win.
  • Todd had an impressive effort stopping 22 shots allowing 13 scores (.628 save %) in the first 53:08, while picking up a game-high nine ground balls.
  • MMA held the advantage in shots on goal (40-20) and ground balls (48-41) while Canton had a 15-13 advantage in face offs.
  • With the loss on Saturday the Roos are mathematically eliminated from postseason play as even with a win in their regular season finale on Tuesday Husson will win the tiebreaker off their head-to-head 12-11 OT win v. the Roos on March 25th.

The Roos close out their season on Tuesday when they visit NVU-Lyndon at 3 p.m.
