Mesler & Fingar Combine for Five Goals at Utica

Utica, NY – Austin Mesler and Kyle Fingar combined for five goals, but the Roos were unable to overcome a six-goal halftime deficit in a 14-8 road loss at Utica University on Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams exchanged three goals each back-and-forth over the first 12 minutes of action. Caeden Goodnough, Mesler and Alex Jacobs recorded the scores for the Roos.
  • From there the Pioneers rattled off six consecutive goals to take a 9-3 lead. Tanner Amell found the back of the net for the Roos with 48 seconds remaining and Joohn Spoto scored with seven ticks left for Utica as the hosts took a 10-4 lead into intermission.
  • Play was even in the second half with the teams scoring four goals each. Fingar and Mesler scored two goals each in the second half, one in each quarter, for Canton.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Mesler led the Roos with three goals, while Fingar had two. Amell chipped in a goal and assist. Noel Abreu led the Roos with five ground balls but went 5-for-14 on faceoffs. Goodnough and Rory McCabe picked up four ground balls each with Goodnough causing a game-high two turnovers.
  • Spoto paced Utica with four goals and an assist, while Connor Costanza had two goals and an assist. Michael Mecca and Luke Rinaudo-Concess registered two goals each.
  • Sam Servati made eight saves allowing 10 goals in the first half, while Hayden Todd turned aside six shots surrendering four scores in the second half.
  • Patrick Oswald picked up the win for Utica allowing five goals making five saves over the first 37:21.
  • Utica doubled up the Roos in shots on goal 28-14 and held the upper hand in ground balls (58-38) and faceoffs (17-8). Utica was 11-for-13 on clears, while Canton was 16-for-24. The Roos went 2-for-5 on man-up opportunities, while the Pioneers were 1-for-5.

The Roos open North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday when they visit SUNY Delhi at 1 p.m.
