Roos Close out Bison Baseball Classic v. Tigers & Shoremen on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Washington, D.C. – Frank Nieto, Nick Shoemaker and Nathan Welch all recorded multi-hit games but the SUNY Canton baseball team dropped a pair of games to Rochester Institute of Technology and Washington College (MD) at the Bison Baseball Classic on Sunday.

The Roos fell 5-4 to the Tigers in a game that was suspended on Saturday and resumed on Sunday at 9 a.m. before falling 17-1 to the Shoremen in Sunday's second game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
GAME 1 – BOX SCORE
  • RIT jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the first. The Roos responded with a single run when Edilberto Rosado scored on a passed ball in the top of the second.
  • Canton added two more runs in the third. Frank Nieto scored on a balk before Nathan Welch scored on a throwing error.
  • The game was suspended due to heavy snow and low visibility after Canton's at-bats in the fourth inning with the Roos leading 3-1 on Saturday.
  • Play resumed at 9 a.m. on Sunday and RIT scored one run each in the fourth and fifth innings to knot things at three apiece headed to the sixth.
  • Nick Shoemaker reached on a throwing error in the sixth that scored Dylan Allen giving Canton the lead.
  • The Tigers scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-4 lead.
  • In their final at-bats with one out in the ninth Nieto tripled to right center. Welch hit a frozen rope to second but the fielder made a nice play to stop the ball and throw him out at first and another ground out ended the game.
  • Kieran Gibson threw three innings on Saturday allowing one earned run with two strike outs and two walks to earn the no-decision. Kayden Guerin took the loss allowing four runs, only one of which was earned, with a walk in five innings.
  • Eric Sipling picked up the win for RIT tossing five innings without allowing an earned run.
  • Nieto and Shoemaker led the Roos with two hits each, while Ian Libby, Adam Marsh and Kyle Poorman all had multi-hit outings for the Tigers.
 
GAME 2 – BOX SCORE
  • Washington started off hot with a five run second inning that began with a solo homer. The Shoremen tacked on two runs each in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings, one in the fifth, and five runs in the seventh.
  • Canton's lone run came in the eighth when Rosado reached on an error scoring Welch.
  • Welch registered a pair of hits including a double, while Shoemaker, Mackenzie Mather and Ian Gacek had one hit each.
  • Scooter SanFilippo paced Washington with three hits and four RBI, while Noah Iseman, Drew Kinsey and Elias Philliposian all had a pair of hits and drove in two runs each.
  • Danny Vargas took the loss on the hill giving up three earned runs with three walks and a strike out in four innings. Morgan De La Garza tossed the final two innings without allowing a hit or run with a walk and a strike out.
  • Ashton Mehler earned the win for the Shoremen throwing five innings of scoreless ball surrendering two hits with seven strike outs and four walks.

The Roos are back in action next Saturday when they visit SUNY Oneonta for a single game beginning at 2 p.m.
