Larson Leads Men’s Hoops Past Maritime

New York, NY – Eli Larson nearly recorded a double-double posting 17 points as seven players scored eight or more points to lead the SUNY Canton men's basketball team to a 73-62 win against Maritime College in the consolation game of the NYU Holiday Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Play was fairly even through the first 10 minutes with the Roos holding a 20-19 lead. With Canton ahead 24-23 they went on an 8-0 run as four different players recorded points opening a 32-23 Roos advantage with 2:31 left in the opening half.
  • Canton held Maritime to just three points over the final 5:16 of the half as they outscored the Privateers 14-3 during that span taking a 38-26 lead into intermission.
  • Terrence Fields led the Roos with eight first-half points, while Larson, Bryon Streb and Moe Biao had six each. Tyler Anderson paced the Privateers with nine points. The Roos shot over 44% from three-point range in the opening half.
  • Maritime momentarily trimmed the deficit to single digits at nine (40-31), but the Roos quickly regained the double-digit lead. The Privateers were able to get within seven with just under seven minutes remaining, but that was as close as they would get as Canton held on for the 11 point victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Larson led the Roos with 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists shooting 7-for-8 from the field and making his lone three-pointer and both of his free throws. Fields tallied 13 points, four assists and three steals and Streb added 10 points, four assists and three boards. Jevonte Williams registered nine points and a team-high five assists, while Kevin Goode Jr., Brennan Harmer and Biao finished with eight points each.
  • Jake Murphy led the way for the Privateers with 18 points and seven assists, while Anderson finished with 15 points.
  • Canton shot nearly 52% from the field and 44% from three-point range compared to marks of 42% and 23% for Maritime.
  • The Roos controlled rebounds (37-26) and bench points (21-11).

The men's basketball team is back in action on Tuesday when they visit Clarkson University at 4 p.m.
