Men’s Basketball Opens NYU Holiday Tournament vs. #9 Violets

New York, NY – Twelve different Roos recorded baskets but visiting SUNY Canton dropped a 96-48 decision to No. 9 nationally-ranked New York University in the opening game of the NYU Holiday Tournament on Friday.

The Violets are ranked ninth nationally in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Roos jumped out to an early 8-1 lead after a Jevonte Williams three-pointer. The Violets would respond with a 10-3 run to tie things at 11 apiece.
  • Canton briefly led again after a Hansen Bagdonas three-pointer (17-15) and things were knotted at 20 apiece with nine minutes left in the opening half after an Ian Florence-Washington three ball.
  • From there NYU used a 16-0 run to open a 36-20 lead and ended the final 8:34 of the half on a 30-9 run to take a commanding 50-29 lead into intermission.
  • The hosts extended their lead to 30 early on in the second half cruising to the victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Bryon Streb and Florence-Washington led the Roos with six points each while Streb tallied a team-best four rebounds. Terrence Fields, Eli Larson and Mark Tomford recorded five points each.
  • Michael Savarino led four players in double figures for NYU with 18 points, while Spencer Freedman (13), Hampton Sanders (13) and Cinque Stephens (10) also reached double figures.
  • NYU shot nearly 45% from the field and 42% from three-point range, while Canton posted marks of 28% and 33%, respectively.
  • The Violets had the upper hand in rebounds (54-32), points in the paint (34-12), fast break points (25-1) and points off turnovers (35-13).
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The men's basketball team is back in action on Saturday when it squares off with Maritime College in the consolation game of the NYU Holiday Tournament at 1 p.m. SUNY Oneonta defeated Maritime 81-51 in Friday's second contest.
