Hooper’s 48 Saves and Schoner’s First Career Goal Lead Roos at #14 Geneseo

Geneseo, NY – Sophomore Kelson Hooper's 48 saves and freshman Niko Schoner's first career goal kept the SUNY Canton men's hockey team in the game until late in the third period against #14 SUNY Geneseo.  The Knights ended up scoring three late goals in the third, including an empty netter, to win 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mitch Machlitt opened the scoring for the Knights at 12:09 of the first period, taking a feed in the slot from Dakota Zarudny and placing the puck just over the outstretched glove of Hooper.
  • The Roos scored their first of the game at 4:28 of the second, when senior Gino DeBlasiis took a zone entry pass from Schoner wide of the net and put it back across the crease back to Schoner.  Schoner made no mistake, backhanding it into the net to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Knights pulled ahead at 12:39 of the third when Alex Dameski tipped a shot from the point to score a power play goal and put Geneseo up 2-1.
  • Less than a minute later, the Knight's Luke Panchisin took a cross-crease pass from Zarudny and buried a shot to lead 3-1.
  • With 3:50 to go in the game, the Roos were awarded a power play and pulled Hooper to gain a 6 on 4 advantage.  They had a few opportunities, but the Knights defense held and were eventually able to score an empty net goal with less than a minute remaining to take the game 4-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Geneseo held a significant advantage in shots, outshooting Canton 52-17.
  • Geneseo also held an advantage at the faceoff dot, winning 42 of the 60 faceoffs.
  • The Knights were 1 for 4 on the power play while the Roos were 0 for 3.
  • The Roos defense blocked 16 shots compared to 11 for Geneseo.
  • Hooper's 48 saves were a career-high surpassing his previous career mark of 37 last season.  Jacob Torgner made 16 saves for the Knights.
