Miller & Drysdale Lead Roos, Stevenson Edges Canton 2-1

Canton, NY – Trey Miller recorded 32 saves and Jackson Drysdale scored his first career goal, but the SUNY Canton men's hockey team dropped a tight 2-1 decision to Stevenson University in the second game of a weekend series on Saturday.

The Mustangs are receiving votes in the preseason USCHO.com Top 15 national poll.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Stevenson 2, SUNY Canton 1
  • Location: Roos House – Canton, NY
  • Records: Stevenson (2-0) | SUNY Canton (0-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team found the back of the net in the opening period with the Roos holding a 14-11 shots advantage after one.
  • Just after the Mustangs killed off a penalty to start the second the Roos turned the puck over in their offensive zone leading to a breakout for John Musella. He beat Roos net minder Miller low blocker side for the unassisted goal.
  • The Mustangs doubled their lead at 11:33 of the middle period with the skater advantage. Stevenson worked the puck from left to right with Musella scoring his second of the game on a wrister from above the right dot. Malcolm Palmer and Aidan McDowell picked up helpers on the play.
  • The Roos got one back at just over a minute later on a power play of their own. Cory Liu and Evan Pringle fed the puck back and forth at the point with Liu wristing a shot through traffic out in front where Drysdale redirected the puck home for his first collegiate goal.
  • With Canton on the penalty kill with just over three minutes left in the second period Nic Herringer and Brendan Morrow provided a great forecheck as the puck bounced off the Mustang goaltender who was out of his net and nearly in.
  • Stevenson held a 13-8 shots advantage in the second period and 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.
  • With just over two minutes remaining in the third the Mustangs had a 2-on-1 and golden chance for an insurance goal, but Miller made a beautiful glove save sliding from his right to left.
  • Canton pulled Miller for the extra attacker with under a minute remaining but were only able to notch one shot on goal down the stretch.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
