DeCapua Records 30 Assists & 10 Kills on Day 2 at Oswego

Oswego, NY – Junior Michaella DeCapua tallied 10 kills and 30 assists on the second day of the Oswego State Tournament, but the Roos dropped a pair of matches to host Oswego State and Utica University.

The Roos fell 3-2 (18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 7-25, 7-15) in the opener to the Lakers before dropping a 3-1 decision  (27-25, 14-25, 10-25, 13-25) to the Pioneers 3-1 in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
MATCH 1 - BOX SCORE
  • The Roos led 6-3 early in the opening set, but the Lakers rattled off nine straight points in the middle of the frame to take control of a 25-18 first set win.
  • Canton roared out to a 17-7 lead in the second set and led 22-14. The Lakers scored five consecutive points to get within three, but the Roos produced the final three points of the set earning the 25-19 win following a DeCapua kill.
  • The third frame was fairly even with the teams knotted at 14 apiece before Oswego earned five straight points. Canton responded with four consecutive points and seven of the next eight points, but Oswego regained a one-point lead on two occasions (22-21, 23-22). The Roos once again finished strong with three straight points on an Alyssa Adams kill, a Kaylee Clark ace, and an Oswego setting error.
  • Despite the two to one set lead it was all host Oswego from there as they outscored Canton 50-14 in the fourth and fifth sets.
  • Emily Dreyer led the Roos with 10 kills, while Adams added seven. DeCapua stuffed the stat sheet with 17 assists, nine digs and five kills. Clark finished with a match-best 18 digs, while Alexas Marshall had three solo blocks.
  • Georgia Farry led Oswego with 18 kills, while Cara Simplicio tallied 12 kills and 12 digs. McKenna Corbin finished with a match-high 41 assists.
 
MATCH 2 - BOX SCORE
  • Utica jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the first set, but six straight points from the Roos knotted things up at 17 apiece. The Pioneers led 23-20 but Canton battled back with four straight points ending in a Dreyer kill and a 24-23 lead forcing Utica to call time out. With the set tied at 25 apiece the Roos were the recipient of a Pioneer error and Sarah Balcom clinched the set with a service ace.
  • Utica controlled the final three sets earning commanding wins of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-13.
  • Adams led the attack with nine kills, Dreyer added seven and DeCapua and Marshall finished with five apiece. Clark totaled 17 digs, Marissa Hawkins finished with 11 and Kiley Zicari added 10. DeCapua finished with 13 assists and eight digs.
  • Eleanor Cepiel supplied the foes with 13 kills and 22 digs and Brianna Woods registered 10 kills. Madison Maggiore dished out 34 assists.
 
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Roos are back in action on Tuesday when they host Paul Smith's College in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
